i used to live in Valencia a year ago before moving back to England for Uni, i love it there (im back in Spain now but at my parents house because its summer holidays, but we live only 1hour from Valencia here and me and my fiancee go up there every other week still for shopping or to the science centre's its a great place)
places to go:
Oceanografico (is an aquarium and a MUST) it is a great day out, it has sea lions, tropical fish, sharks, whales, dolphins (including a show) there's lots to see. tickets are only 25 euros.

This aquarium is based in the City of Arts & Science, a newly built, beautiful part of Valencia, there is the science building, very good for children as there are lots of "hands on" activities in there, theres an imax cinema, a (place where you learn about the planets/stars, im sorry i dont know the word in English) and theres the famous Opera house.

There are lots of mall's (shopping centres) with loads of great shops, these are all right in the city centre:
Nuevo Centre (10/10)
El Saler (7/10)
Aqua (9/10)
Galeria Don Juan de Austria (never been to this one, for more expencive shops)
Galeria Jorge Juan (never been to this one, for more expencive shops)
Gran Turia (love this one 10/10)

this page will give you maps to them all:
http://www.valenciavalencia.com/shopping/shopping-malls.htm

another great street for shopping is Calle Colon (thats the name of the street) (if you go to the Valencia train station its right next to it)

Then of course is the beach and the port, which are very nice. you much visit the old city centre part of valencia, which is very historical and the buildings are all old Spanish designs, very nice.

there are plenty of museums also. you should have a great trip.
hope i helped

Valencia is divided into three provinces, Valencia, Alicante and Castellon. Alicante is a major destination for beaches.

Valencia (the city capital), is a medium size city with very good public transport (metro, buses) , so it is easy to sight see.
The old part of the city and the center have beautiful buildings. The river bed has been converted into a park that finishes off near the port in an area of museums with amazing modern architecture.
The food: paella and fideagua are the best!

About 10 or 15 minutes South of the city (by car/bus), you will find 'El Saler', a natural reserve with beautiful beaches and la Albufera, a giant lake next to the sea.. Even within the city there are some nice beaches by la Malvarosa. Not the most picturesque side of town, but the beach is nice and there are very good restaurants.

Going a bit inland, the are nice mountain areas. (not high mountains)

Try GoogleEarth, and check out the pictures there.
