Definitely take the AVE train (the high speed train) - if you book up to 15 days in advance then you can get up to 60% discount on tickets (although these are limited) so you can make the trip not so costly. The cheapest one-way ticket I found was 42.10 Euros (around 58 dollars at today's rates). book by phone (spanish language only) or on internet www.renfe.es. You may also be able to book via a local travel agent.

I would take the Ave high speed train. Tickets should run you about $215, but you get there quickly (about 3 1/2 hours).
A bus roundtrip ticket will cost about $45 but will take 8 hours.
