The trains that run from Madrid to Granada are very infrequent and very long trips. They are normal passenger trains, and run about two times a day. The trip is between four and a half and five hours.

A different train option would be to take the AVE (Alta Velocidad) from Madrid to Córdoba, and then take a bus (or even the passenger train again) to Granada.

Or just avoid the whole headache and catch a bus. It's cheaper, anyway. And it takes five hours, as opposed to four hours and 45 minutes on the train.

My recommendation: Take a bus.

And, the train to SEVILLA is about 2.5 hours, but the train, then, from Sevilla to Granada (you can't get to Grenada by train...it's an island in the Caribbean...that would be an AWFULLY long way over water in a train!) is another three hours, I believe, and I don't think they have an AVE route there, yet.

Best thing to do is to go to the Renfe website. They have the content in English and you can even book your tickets online: http://www.renfe.es/horarios/english/index.html

The journey takes four & a half hours. It is not a high speed train (AVE). I believe there are only two trains a day and I'm not certain if it runs in late December

It's fast, less than 3 hours. I can't remember how much it cost, but it's not too expensive and it's a great way to go. You should be able to research fares by google-ing Spain Trains. Get thee to the Alhambra, and the cathedral is impressive. Check out the Albaycin (the Muslim neighborhood). Also watch out for the pickpockets. I was surprised how many backpackers, hippies, and apparently homeless were there scouting opportunities from tourists.
Have a great time. Spain is gorgeous. Go to Cordoba and Ronda and Seville while you're there too, if you get the chance.
