How many people in Spain have blond hair?

I've never personally been to Spain, but I live in Portugal (really Mediterranean) and I've only seen I think one natural blond here. I asked my friends the other day who just got back from Spain and they said there aren't any blonds there. They said when you see someone with blond hair, you know they're a foreigner or an immigrant. The lightest Spanish hair color, they say, is light brown. I wasn't sure they knew what they were talking about since I have Spanish friends who say they have blond siblings.

What's true? Can someone help me debunk all the myths here haha.

It depends on the region, but the percentages that thematrix has given are mainly correct. However, the typical spaniard is light skinned with brown hair and brown eyes. Just like me. In andalusia, it might be more dark skinned due to the moorish or gypsy influence. It's difficult to recognize a spaniard; we have had a lot of migrations and invasions from the north, south and east along the history, and we can seem a moorish, a german, a gypsy, a french, an italian, a briton... It depends on the region and on the person!

I have lived in Madrid and Valencia for over a year and my job entails me to travel to all parts of Spain yet i have never met a natural blonde Spaniard. If they exist, I've certainly never seen them

Not true. Many of the blonds in Spain are bleached or dyed, but there a lot more natural blonds than most people believe. Particularly in the North. They are much fairer skinned than we are led to believe, too. There is a much stronger influence from the Moors in Portugal, for some reason (seafaring nature is my theory).

In fact, I have a friend from Madrid, who is so fair, freckled and red haired that you would think she was Irish or German! As far as she knows, her family is Spanish from WAYYYY back. Her sister is a redhead, too. Even Mamá has auburn hair...And one of my housemates when I lived in Sevilla, was very similarly colored...red hair and freckles...she was from Paiz Vasco...Euskara. I even met a woman not too long ago from Barcelona, who I immediately pegged as German or French. We laughed a little about how easy it is to confuse...`

A lot depends on where in Spain your friend was...most likely in the south, where there is, again, a very strong influence from the Moors...

And when you think about it, how many true blondes are there, ANYWHERE?

In Spain, as a whole, some 29 per cent of the male population has black hair, some 68 per cent dark brown, while traces of blondism are visible in 17 per cent.
