How much on average does it cost to live in Spain? |
I've always wanted to go to Spain, so I thought right after I got out of highschool I would go to help with my spanish.
I'm currently a sophomore and have about two and a half more years to save up.
I was just wondering, how much does it cost monthly in euros to live in Spain? Particularly more to the south but not in a big city. If you live there, any extra suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Please note that this is not a joke. I am thinking about maybe even going to school there once I am fluent enough in the language. I know I'm young but this is something I'm seriously considering. And this will not be just for a few weeks. I'm talking months or maybe years if I ever change my mind. |

I don't know what age that is, but you won't be able to do it easily/alone until your over 18 because you'll need to own a credit card to rent somewhere...
Consiering the average wage here a year is around 19.000€... I'd say that is how much money you need. the Minimum wage a month is 650€... I think (for most jobs)
=/... but we do have high un-employment (3 million people)
So if you wanted to get a job, you'd have to speak Spanish to a very good level and English (fluent) to work in the Tourist industry, because if you can't there is someone else like you but who can speak better Spanish wanting your job.
It depends on where you live for thing's like Water..Gas..Electric..Telephone...Televi... the other utilites |

Do you have an EU passport? If not, you cannot legally stay in Spain (or the Schengen area as a whole) for more than 90 days. The exception would be if you could get accepted to a Spanish university and be on a student visa.
Unless you know which city you want to live it, it's impossible to tell you how much it costs to live there. Most young Spanish people live at home until their 20s because it's very expensive to live alone - housing is not cheap and salaries are low for entry level jobs. |

I think it is really difficult for an 18 year old to survive alone ANYWHERE, much less in a foreign country. I think you should consider the option of taking a school exchange. Check into 13th year programs, or see if you can find something that will help you to work, instead of going to school...an au pair program would be perfect for someone who loves kids.
If that doesn't work out, you could always go during university. You have more freedom to travel and do things your own way at that age.
That said, expenses in Spain are pretty similar to the US. Higher in the big cities, and lower in small towns. Just like in the US.
Check with CIEE and EF for work opportunities. CIEE does exchange study and work programs (most people can't do both, because the visas are different) |

How can anybody say how much it is going to cost to live in Spain in 2 or 3 years time. Things are changing day to day here. Why don't you do some sort of student exchange to learn the language. Have you thought looking on the University sites. Most places here have some English. The south of Spain is full of British anyway. |

HIII!! hola!
I am from spain! :D and I can say that living in spain is getting expensive and more for americans because you use the dollar and we use the Euro...
I live in madrid and I have to say reantals in big cities are cheapear than in american cities. In madrid the less you can pay for a rent is like 300 euros a month and I know people who are paying 800 a month.
And don't worry about it! I wanna move to the US in a few years and I am only 18, so I know how you feel!
I have no idea how can cost a rent in the south, but obviously a lot cheaper! except for sevilla and other big southern cities that are not as expensive as madrid but still... maybe you can pay 300 a monthe at the most in a souther town.
GOOD LUCK!!!! |
