I have walked alone in the Ramblas area of Barcelona at night and nothing has happened to me.

I've been on holiday to Barcelona on my own as well for a week and again, nothing bad happened.

Of course that's not a guarantee that nothing will happen to you.
However, if you keep your valuables that you have on you safe and walk confidently i.e. know where you're going, you should be OK.
This is kind of a general rule anywhere you go though.

If you scream "I am a tourist" by hanging an expensive camera around your neck and staring upwards everywhere you go, you may find you get pick pocketed.

But again, that's pretty much a general rule.

I wouldn't say that generally Barcelona was unsafe.

I you have common sense, are not drunk or stoned walking alone and do not allow any stranger to touch or talk with you, nothing should happen to you.

In Barcelona, naive tourists have their wallet or camera stolen. Thieves have no fire arms like in the US and muggins are rare.

They do no harm because 99% of those pick-pockets are illegal immigrants, who do not go to prison if they only steal money or valuables amounting less than 300 EUR.

It's not safe to walk around alone anywhere at night so does it really matter?

Just stay away from alleyways, unlit fields and groups of people.
