Sue has it. There are trains that run from Alicante (Alacant in Valencian) to Barcelona, that stop in Tarragona. Tickets are typically 40-50 euros each way, with a discount for round trip.

Check the Renfe website. you will find all the train schedules, and can buy your ticket online...all the usual stuff.

In between Barcelona and Tarragona take the regional trains (cercanias, Catalunya Expres), whih go to the station in the center of town . Do NOT take the high speed!!! The station Camp de Tarragona is far from the city!!!!
For Tarragona to Alicante take either the Euromed or one of the Talgo trains.
