How to get from Madrid to Morocco?

Outside of the option of expensive plane flights from Madrid to Morocco, what other travel options are there? What are the expected costs (by bus/boat/etc)? How long does this trip usually take? Many thanks

If you are interested in the trip and not just getting there, then taking the ferry from Algeciras is a must!

Getting to this small town just a hop away from Gibraltar can be done on by bus or train...depending on your budget and the time you're willing to spend in transit. You will board a large vessel with several hundred people in what feels like a constant wind storm. Try hooking up with some foreigners on the same wacky adventure and without an itinerary...this should offer a few laughs all by itself.

Once you arrive, look for a taxi cab after crossing through customs (an ominous experience for the uninitiated). Cab drivers will hound you so be prepared to haggle and, if necessary, walk to the nearest village (about five kilometers from the coast). These guys are handy in about six languages, it helps to keep them nearby after you've reached your destination. But beware, they will leading you to their brother (cousin, nephew, whichever) nestled tightly within the older part of the nearest town and who sells a cornocopia of arabic goodies, from carpets to trinkets! Once they catch on that you are entirely unwilling to make a purchase, their hospitality flies out the window...along with your...rearend.

After this, your adventure begins. Never stay in any hotel nor eat in an establishment that's worth rating. Remember, this is not the Riveria, and must be experienced with adventure. Otherwise, stay in Fuengirola...with the Jetset!

Check easyjet and ryanair which have recently started flights from madrid to morocco. With taxis, buses, trains, ferries and food it works out cheaper and you´ll be at your destination much sooner!

Take a bus from Madrid to Algeciras, (may need to change, e.g in Malaga) then take the ferry over to Morrocco. Not sure how much it would cost. There are also travel companies who do weekend trips to morrocco, which I've gone on from Malaga, and know they also run from Granada. They probably run from Madrid too. Try contacting a travel agent. There is one called Halcyion or Halcyon (not sure of spelling) which is a big company, so you should be able to get in contact with them and they should be able to point you in the right direction. There are a lot of people from Morrocco who live in Spain, so there should be fairly good transport links, although the people going home for the summer holidays usually are in a fully packed car with large packages tied to the roof!

Cheapest and fastest would be to fly. You can find cheap flights on www.whichbudget.com
Good luck!

Run to the bottom of Spain and swim to Africa, then run to where you are going
