I'm going to Barcelona Spain and need some advice.? |
I'm a 17 year old american girl going to Barcelona for 4-6 weeks. Is there anything I should bring beside the obvious? What should I expect once I am there? Is there anything I should be particularly careful of? Thanks! Additional Details What should the temperature be like in May? What is the time difference between Barcelona and St Louis Missouri? |

Don't bring many high heeled shoes, you will be doing a lot of walking. Actually, don't bring much because shopping there is amazing and if you find you need another bathing suit you can just buy one at H&M or Zara.
Be aware that you will most likely be expected to seat yourself if you walk into a restaurant and you will have to ask for the check when you are done. Bring a coin purse because you will be carrying around a lot of euro coins. Also, you can drink pretty much anywhere you want. Try going to Placa del Rey next to the cathedral and enjoying the night with a few beers. Which brings me to my next point, a beer in barcelona is a caña, not a cerveza. Just tell the waiter, "una caña por favor".
Be aware that Barcelona's old town is made of tiny winding streets and until you feel comfortable orienting yourself, you might want to carry a map around with you. Of course there are pick pockets but just do what the Spanish women do and always have a hand over or on it. it won't look as vulnerable to thieves. Bring your favorite over the counter drugs, it can be hard finding comparable options at farmacias. Same with shampoo, conditioner, deodorant. Carry a little pack of tissue with you because not all places will have toilet paper stocked up.
Last but not least, go to jazz-si on tuesday for all music/covers or on Friday for Flamenco. You will get the feel of a real local hangout.

In May you won't need to carry a sweater around and it won't be ridiculously hot. May will have gorgeous weather. Don't bring shorts, girls don't wear them. Have fun, don't let culture shock or apprehension detract from your experience. |

You will have a great time in Barcelona. I can't think that you'd need to bring anything particularly special. You can get guide books in English and things here.
To find out the time in Barcelona, go to www.timeanddate.com you just type in Barcelona and you'll see the time in real time.
Be really careful of pickpockets. I always hear about people having been pickpocketed although it's never happened to me. I guess it's the obvious really. Don't leave your bags unattended in street cafés, always be aware of where your money is etc. I guess it's the same for any big city.
There are really great places to visit.
If you like architecture, there is a fantastic Guadà park called "Parque Güell" which is like a park out of a fairy tale.
There are also lots of great art galleries like the Picasso museum.
The weather should be nice in May. About 15-25 degrees celsius but it may rain around this time.
It's a pretty easy city to get around in buses and it's quite touristy so you'll find in most places, they speak English etc.
A nice place to stroll down is the Ramblas. It is a street with a pedestrian bit in the middle with loads of roadside cafés and "human statues".
If you haven't got accomodation yet, for that period of time, I would recommend perhaps renting an apartment.
You can get more space for the same price as a hotel room and you can also cook which means not eating out all the time.
There are loads of websites that you can book short term rentals from.
Just do a google search and you'll find some for every price range.
I'm not really sure what other information would be useful to you but I'm sure you'll have no trouble and have a great time. |

May is a great month to visit - shouldn't rain (I've no idea what it's like in St Louis in May?!), and will be nice weather - no need for jackets, as others have mentioned.
With regards stuff to bring. Don't forget a travel adaptor! Appliencies in Spain have the round, 2 pin outlets and this might cause problems for emergency things like a cellphone!
Expect Barcelona tooutlive your expectations - it does for almost everyone. Be careful for the pickpockets on the metro and around the old town, but don't let that scare you - it's no different than visiting another major city - be it in Europe or US.
For a good heads upon what not to miss, check out:
http://www.bcn-rentals.com/barcelona-guide/world-heritage-sites.html
and you'll be on the right track!
Have fun, and come back if you have any specifics, I'll be happy to try and help! |

Barcelona it's a great place to visit. In may the temperature is very nice, so you don't need a big jacket.
A varied climate
The climate in Catalonia is mainly Mediterranean around the coastal areas, whilst inland the climate becomes more continental in essence.
A temperate climate, characteristic of a Mediterranenan region, although there are areas defined as having a high mountain climate, such as the Pyrenees. Catalonia experiences moderate temperatures all year round. However, towards the north, we approach areas where an Alpine climate is dominant, as the altitude increases.
The best advise I can tell you is to learn some "catalan" words. Because the Catalan people speak their own language and the address and advertising are in their own language.
If you wan some information to barcelona, you can check this web: http://www.spain.info/TourSpain/Destinos/CCAA/Datos%20Generales/I/0/Geografia.htm?Language=en |
