I have lived in Andalucia- Southern Spain for 20 years. I would suggest preperation is the best bet. Learn some of the language, and get information online from some of the muscal schools in the major cities...Barcelona is the most cosmopolitan city, and contrary to what another person said, Americans don't 'stand out because of the way they dress'-nonsense!! Barcelona has millions of foreign visitors every year, and welcomes them with open arms - my own (scottish) daughter studied there, and I could hardly get her to come home at the end of her studies-she loved it!! Madrid, Granada, Valencia etc, are more 'spanish' but I had a neice who studied spanish at Zaragoza Uni, and she also loved it. I would get on to the US embassy online, and get as much information from them as you can. But -Go For It, and if you are looking for a starting City, you could do worse than Barcelona......Googel ..American Club Barcelona, and you will find hep there...........good luck! xx

Your best bet, truly, is to just go through an American University exchange program. Check into it through whatever school you might be attending, now, or one near where you live, if you aren't currently a student.

For music? I would search online, but there's probably respectable programs at many of the larger schools. If you are looking for Flamenco training, I'd suggest Madrid, Sevilla or Granada.

I'm sexier than you
Spain is beautiful, but I tell you. People in Spain can totally spot out an American. Try not to bring any sweat pants and dress with style, Americans are known to not dress their best. Also, try sight-seeing some roman ruins.
