In my opinion this is the @rsehole of Spain: it is full of ticky-tacky urbanisations of Brits and Germans, who have no interest in learning Spanish, but merely want their own country, but with better weather. The massive spread of building, coupled with the non-integration with the locals has generated real problems - and the amount of mostly-empty holiday homes has attracted Easern Europen theiving gypsy gangs to burgle and mug.

I couldn't agree more with Peter C. Having said that, I have been to the area and many Brits who live there love the place. When I go to the area, the only people I can speak Spanish to are at the toll booths on the motorway.
I live in rural Spain and part of the enjoyment is integrating with the Spanish people. Torrevieja as Peter says, is little Britain with better weather.
