I´m Spanish.Via Madrid you are doing too many kilometers without need. You should go via Bilbao,Zaragoza and then Alicante. In this web I´ve posted you, you´ve got the map with the route you should take.If you go on top of the areas and click the image, you can make it bigger so syou see the name of the roads and motorways.
Click on "como llegar"(on your left) and then on A write Zaragoza and on B write Alicante. Then click "como llegar " and your map appears
It´t the best option.Seriously.

Spain has a road network measuring 317,000 kilometres of which 2,000 are relatively recent motorways. The most important motorways are: the Mediterranean coastal road from the French border to Alicante, and the one linking the Cantabrian region with Catalonia. The use of the Spanish motorways usually requires paying a toll, especially in the North of the country, which can be calculated on the basis of the type of vehicle in question and the distance to be travelled.

Glad to help you

Spanish roads are really good so you should have no problem whatsoever.
Have a nice journey!

I did Bilbao to Murcia and it took about 14 hours with several stops and in a loaded van,go via Madrid,it`s really easy to follow a map, loads of stop off places/picnic areas, well sign posted,it`s just a long haul that`s all,but negotiating Madrid will be your only problem so plan ahead,

According to Microsoft Autoroute distance is 503miles time around 7h 44m going via Madrid.

The distance is 901.90km / 560..39 miles

I drove 1978 from Barcelone via Saragossa to Madrid, was not so difficult, but dangerous, for spanish lorry drivers didn`t respect the rules.
But I guess today it has changed. I guess one day.

Definetely via Madrid. Should be about 7-8 hrs, but take at least 2 breaks. Check www.viamichelin.co.uk

It took me 13 hours to Málaga from Santander which is further than Alicante. The roads are very good, but make sure you have a break every two hours. When leaving Santander, don't take the direct route to Burgos, take the motorway (A8) to Bilbao and then over the mountains on the motorway to Burgos. The direct route to Burgos is just two way traffic. If you get stuck behing a slow moving vehicle it will be a long journey. You have to go via Burgos, Madrid and Zaragoza.
