I am planning to spend my holiday in Spain for Christmas and New Year 2009? |
Hello guys, thank you for viewing my question.
I'm a UK student who plan to spend the holiday in Spain. I got a budget of roughly ÂŁ1k for the whole trip which I save from a year of my part time working. I want to experience and learn the Spanish culture. My holiday started on the 13/12/08 till 04/01/09.
When I do some research, there is so many place came out and its hard for me to decide and I really need your opinion especially somebody who have been there. I want to experience Christmas and New Year in Spain. I dont have that much money and I really want to get benefit out of it.
I would really appreciate if somebody could give me some opinion on several place that I can go with reasonable price.
Thank you guys, god bless and a Happy New Year. |

You have alot of money for that amount of time, there are more celebrations in the New Year. There are many fiestas... and all the major cities have fireworks
We have ´santa´come on the 6th January it is the day the 3 Wise Men gave Jesús his gift's it is the day we recive gift's
Sant Esteve is the 26th Decmber in all CatalĂ speaking parts of Spain - how ever I think excluding Valencia... he is one of the Saint's of Catalunya.
So I would recomdend staying there for that.
Madrid is good for night life - anytime so it will be leading up to Christmas
1000 Pounds is about... :/ 1500€ or somthing it depend's on the accomdation you want renting a villa in season can cost 1000€ + a week... so if you wanted to spend more money on actavies we have Hostals... they are a 1 Start hotel... for about 30€ a night... they are clean with a private room and usually an own bathroom (the cheaper ones might share) you could also look out for Hotels AC they are like a motel - prices varity by location.
When possible get busses and Metro and Trams and Trains in the Holiday season not Taxis
As you are over 4 week's here I'd sugest traveling
Madrid Night life
Barça to spend christmas day and saint steven's day
then I'd choose any majour city you've always wanted to visit for New year's day
or in revers and spend New Year in Madrid... would problery be better... it is 50€ to get the train from Most places to Madrid (to get to North from South you need to go via Madrid)
Also if you get the train... it would cost 50€ but you could sleep on the train... so you'd get to a place & most train stations have showers |

Hello!
Not sure if my other message got posted, but it looks like it didn´t!
anyway, I was rambling on about how i ended up here in Barcelona...all thanks to my experiences over Christmas-time last year! I followed a Christmas course in Barcelona, where i met a whole bunch of amazing people! We learnt Spanish, and really felt the Spanish culture :) After class we did all sorts of activities and it´s all really affordable! I booked my Christmas course through Estudio Hispanico - www.estudiohispanico.com - and they made sure everything worked out - accomodation, course, activities etc.
New Years´ is really different here to the UK because they generally don´t do fireworks during new years (they do every other day of the year it seems haha) but what they do do, is alternate a grape and a gulp of wine for the last 12 seconds...the result --> every1 is PLASTERED hahaha it´s fun!!
good luck finding something! |

I've only been to Madrid, so I wouldn't presume to tell you where to go, but here are some ways you can stretch your budget:
Look into flying RyanAir or EasyJet (you might be able to get round trip tickets for under 75 pounds).
If you go to a city, you can probably find a cheap hostel (I stayed in Madrid for 14 to 20 Euros per night--the 20 Euro a night place was better, but both were good)
Make sure to bring a student ID, you can get great discounts on museum entries.
Enjoy your holiday. |

You have three weeks to "experience and learn the culture of Spain"? Good luck. I am sure you will have a great time, you don't say WHERE in Spain you want to go. There is so much! But three weeks to learn Spain? You can't do it. I lived there for 10 months, and don't feel like I got enough! And that, after ten years of study.
Have a great trip. Have fun. Be a bit more specific. Christmas and el DĂa de los Magos (Jan 6) are pretty much family celebrations, but if you get to the closest cathedral, you can experience the religious part. I'm pretty sure you can find a midnight mass on Dec. 24. |
