I'm part Spanish too. My Grandmother came to America - via Cuba. Do you want to know more about Spain or your family. Have you tried looking up Spain on the Web. There are several sights that give information about Spain. My Grandmother refused to let her Grandchildren learn Spanish. She was proud of becoming an American Citizen, and demanded that her family speak English. She didn't tell us much about Spain, so I've done a little research on-line. If you want to learn about your family, a good place to start is the Ellis Island sight. If you know the last names of the people who immigrated you can start by looking up the name on a ship's log. This will tell you when they came to the United States, and from where. You can also check old Census records if you know where they lived. This will give you more information to research.

I lived outside of Madrid, Spain for 1973 through 1977 while I was in the US Air Force. During that time we lived under Generalissimo Franco, until he died, then under the Monarchy and Democracy. The country was pretty economically disadvantaged, which was good for us. Our rent in a 3 bedroom apartment was $75 a month, a liter of a decent red wine was 25 cents, and we could almost always find a room, outside Madrid, for less than $7 a night, including continental breakfast

The people, food, accommodations, attractions, history, etc, were all wonderful.

We went back in 2001, 2 months after 911. The country has improved greatly. Prices are up there though, but it is still a good bargain in Europe. Even though I am not of Spanish heritage, I still consider Spain to be my second home. I love almost everything about the country.

If you ever want to go, try to make your trip so you can see "Las Fallas" festival in Valencia. Also, get the book, "Or I'll Dress You in Mourning." It is about the bullfighter, El Cordobes. It will help you to understand and appreciate the art and pageantry of the bullfight.

Please don't make learning of you country as a duty, you should feel honored and proud of being Spanish.
