There are all sorts of safe, modest lodgings in Barcelona. No reason why a Youth hostel or a Hostal should be suspect, unless you walk inside and get a strange feeling. Stay on the Ramblas if you can take the late night party noise.
As for the pickpockets, they only want your money. They rarely actually hurt anyone, you won't even know they were there, most of the time, until you realize your valuables are gone...big problem, just not too dangerous. Keep your things close to your body. Keep copies of all the credit card information: account and phone numbers.

Barcelona is a very safe city, just watch out for the pickpockets. Staying in a hostel is fine. Hostel Felipe (www.hotelfelipe2.com) is good value and just a little out of the centre. Hostel Opera is right on La Rambla (www.hostalopera.com).
