Not everything is more expensive. Especially living is cheaper, because of a lot of things you have to take care of individually in America are here obliged which makes them cheaper, because everyone has them. I mean health insurance, insurances for unemployment, for impossibility to work, insurance to have time off if you have a baby and so forth. Other things that are much cheaper because the government subsidises it are the arts. It's not really expensive to go to the opera or a concert or a play. To see the world famous Concertgebouw orchestra (check google, they are famous), at the best places is about 50 dollar. And that in one of the better concerthalls (I mean soundwise) in the world. If you want to see a good orchestra in New York I guess you'd have to pay at least three or four times as much.
Furthermore a lot of things that are considered at least 'questionable' in the states are cheaper here. Think of cannabis, prostitutes, alcohol, abortus, gay marriage, etc. Of course not everywhere in Europe these things are allowed and thus cheap, but for instance in the Netherlands hash costs less then five dollar a gram. Still, even though it's not really expensive, only half percent of the population smokes it regularly (after their puberty when you try everything). Guess it's the same as with tobacco: not really expensive, but you know it's not healthy, so you don't smoke

yes they try to suck you dry over there

Eh.. Do you mean "everything in Europe" or everything in Spain and Italy?

Not all Europe has changed their money to Euro, Sweden for example has not.

I live in sweden, where you pay in kronor. I've been in Spain before they changed to Euro, and everything was... More or less expensive. I've never been to the US, but I've heard that it's more expensive there than in most parts of Europe, but I'm not sure if that's correct.

To be honest, I don't think that it's such a big difference between most European counries and the US regarding how much stuff cost.

Conversion of money. Euro is worth more than the dollar.

I live in Andalucia in Cadiz in the town of Rota... Not everything is more expensive, but you have to check the currency rates for the euro because it is always flucuating...
