It's a very good idea, especially if you can get away from the coast and see the real Spain. Public transport is relatively cheap, though the trains are fast catching everyone up these days.
I personally wouldn't plan anything in advance, I'd just go where you feel like going at the time.
Spain is a wondrous country. Most people who say they've been to Spain rarely get away from the beach. Do yourself a favour and see as much as you can. |

It's cheapish if you stay at backpacker hostels and budget hotels, travel by bus,and buy food in the markets, shops, and supermarkets....I normally go for a month on holidays...less isn't enough! Spain is wonderful. For a trip around see my answer on this. It's got loads of links so you can see what's in store...loads of goodies to enjoy. http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ar74XS0G7ZWFZY4wJTWAJMggBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20090313024852AAicZCw&show=7... You can do all of it in a month, and more if you want, but rushing from one place to another is no good. Better enjoy fewer places well than lots of them a little. You can do it on $40 a day or even less if you are careful. $50 a day you can be more comfortable. £30-£35 if you're British. But for that price you have to have self discipline when you're round the shops. If you want to eat out every night, see a show every few days,go clubbing, etc, then $60-$70 a day would just do.....Look all around the Andalucia.com site...it's packed with info and it's the best resource for anything in Andalucia. Most backpackers have kitchens where you can cook your own food...that saves a lot of money, especially if two or three of you get together to buy for the meal....a lot of folks do it that way. For long journeys, use over-night buses and save the price of a hostel bed for the night. Every little helps. |

I kinda like it too! Do some research online and expect to have to spend $100 USD per day to spend outside of your airfare. So, bring at least $3000 for a month. Some daily expenses and sightseeing will be more than $100 per day and most will be less. You'll also be better off if you buy some kind of railpass from raileurope.com and plan the travel for the places you HAVE to see and allow yourself flexibility for the "well I feel like going here instead" kind of days. Pay for that outside of this $3K if you can.
Get Lonely Planet, Frommers, and/or Let's Go guidebooks and use their websites for your planning. Spain is not huge, about the size of Texas I think, but there's lots to see and the regions are all very different from each other. I highly recommend spending most of your time in the Andalucia region, Barcelona, and Madrid for a couple days.
Spain is cheaper than most of western Europe, so bonus points there, for the amount of history, culture, nature, and fun you can have there.
Stay at hostels to save on expenses, eat cheap most days, from sandwich shops for breakfast and lunch, then you have flexibility to get nice dinners when you want to. Travel with other trustworthy people that you meet along the way.
You will have the time of your life. I am jealous!
Oh, and pack light and do laundry along the way, once per week, otherwise you will wish your luggage would be stolen, LOL! No more than a rolling suitcase or backpack that you can handle easily on trains and busses.
Have a great time, if you decide to do it! |

Not too stupidly expensive...you'll be on vacation for a whole month...that's all. You will need to figure in a bit extra for the extra travel, but it's cheaper than going for a week at a time, and paying airfare four times.
We did it...it cost about $5000 US per person...but then we had to fly from Denver to Spain...that was over $1000 each! Sounds like you're only traveling from Britain...much cheaper!
If you need help planning your itinerary...email me with what interests you, and I can make up a sample. |
