Spain is ok, I moved here from the UK a few years ago now and know quite a few American expats. The only thing you need to be aware of from an immigration point of view is that to work and live here permenantly, you need to apply for residencia, althoiugh this technically is no longer required under EU law, its a nightmare trying to get anything done, and as a non-european, you will need it to work here. This does involve a lot of paperwork, consult a lawyer first and decide if you want to go through it.
When you get here, Get a spanish lawyer that speaks english, not an english lawyer that speaks spanish. not a fool-proof idea, but there are a few dodgy lawyers here.
Also, to help you with the general and excessive paperwork here, get a gestoria (like an accountant, but does more) again, a spaniard is best.
And lastly, contrary to common beleif, manana means "not today" as opposed to tomorrow.
good luck

First of all emmigrating from the US is a very good choice. To where you actually move is a different thing. What do you picture yourself doing there? I think Spain is a great place to live, but I don't know how the job market is or how it is to work there.

I emmigrated from the US to Germany 15 years ago, and it was the best decision I could ever have made. Working in Germany is great, but I don't like the cold weather - you can't have everything. If you are an 'employee' Germany is one of the best places you can work. Salaries are comprable or a bit higher than in the US, the work-week is only 35 hrs (any OT you get as time off), and everyone gets 6 weeks paid vacation. I will work for a few more years and then look for a warmer place to live.

Yes, I think Spain is a good choice. I moved here from the U.K. with my husband and 3 young children and have never looked back. The people are very friendly, the climate is great and it is fairly easy to find work and create opportunities for yourself if you don't mind too much what you do.
The language is fairly easy to learn and the Spanish system is quite accommodating to all the foreigners that reguarly invade their shores.
You have the option of either gravitating towards one of the tourist areas were you will find lots of English speaking people, so therefore work is easier to find, or you can make for one of the less popular areas were the excellent Spanish way of life is less diluted.

If you would like to learn more about all different aspects of this lovely country you may like to have a look at my web site:-
