Hi, I live in Valencia at the moment and I love it. The city is beautiful and although it is the 3rd largest city in Spain it still has a friendly feel to it, unlike Madrid or Barcelona. The crime rate is very low and mainly the only trouble seems to come from gypsies stealing bags and mobile phones and then moving on to Barcelona.

There is not a huge English Speaking community here, most of the locals either dont speak English or dont want to, which is fine by me because I need to improve my Spanish. It can be difficult to find a job therefore if you dont speak Spanish. It took me a long time as most recruiting is done by word of mouth or signs on lamposts and in windows so there is a heck of a lot of leg work. There are agencies but they dont seem to be in a rush to help you so if you need a job quickly you are better off wondering about with your CV.

Life is very cheap. You can get a menu del dia here of 3 or 4 courses for around 6 Euros and eating out never seems to cost more than 20 Euros a head. There are lots of cool nighclubs and bars but drinks can be expensive and you can pay 6 or 7 Euros for a Rum and Coke or more depending on the club. If you want a cheap drink stick to the small Spanish bars where a glass of wine costs arond 2 euros.

Rent is cheap for a big city too. I currently pay 140 Euros a month for a room in a shared house. There are lots of students here so there are lots of student flats with empty rooms for you to rent cheaply. Getting around is cheap too. There is a metro system 10 journeys for just over 5 euros and taxis never seem to cost more that 5 euros either.
Hope this helps

i visited there for the day when i was a foriegn exchange student, the culture is soooo beautiful. thhey are mostly devout catholics so after store closed for siesta (patrons close all shops for a few hours to go home and cook and eat and nap) they go to mass. It is not expensive at all (or the part I was in) but I did spend alot on arts becuase the paintings and pottery was so beautiful. Im assuming you can speak spanish becuase it would be impossible to work there without being fluent, they speak little to no english at all. it may even help if you know some basque becuase the basque country isnt far away. good luck and happy traveling :)
