There are more but these should be helpful to you. I also agree re the CD's by Michel Thomas. Also, do as I did before I emigrated out here and enrol at night school for Spanish Language...very helpful.
There are books, but not many good ones. Also...when you get here , enrol at a language school ASAP. Best of luck.

Depends on where you are going but in most of the tourists places they will talk English.
The best way of learning Spanish for me was just to be there and all the time trying to talk with the locals (and Spanish colleagues).
In about 3-4 months I could speak nearly fluent Spanish, but then again I learn languages very quickly.
I actually had a friend who was learning Spanish for 2 years already (books and classes) and I simply out did her on her Spanish after those 3-4 months.
I say, just go there and learn it on the street, it's still the best way to learn.

Te deseo mucho suerte y hasta luego :-)
(I wish you lots of luck and catch ya later)

You will pick it up and learn very quickly when you are living there but it is a good idea to try to learn a little now.

My advice would be to learn words first.
Buy a dictonary, first learn the basics, hello, bye, how are you..... Then try to learn the numbers, then days of the week, then the months..........
Then move onto food/drink, the weather.........
Do it in whatever order you think is most imortant to learn first but do it in sections learning as much in that section as you can.
I also had one of those translators (looks like a small calculator), that was very usefull, only about £15 from Argos.

Also get a cd but just a cheap one for you to learn pronounciation and preferable that simply teaches numbers etc... So maybe a cd for children, seems silly I know but afterall you are starting from scracth like a child has to. (or try the library for c.d)

Think about what you will actually need to know when you are there. This is why I do not recommend you learning from an adult cd at first, it will not teach you what you need. It is also difficult to understand and learn.

When you get the idea of how the words are pronounced and you know lots of words you can start to put it all together. Trust me if you do it this way it will make more sense.
Once you feel more confident try an adult cd from the library, they usually have a phrase book too. This is just to help with pronounciation (practice) and putting the sentence together.

I hope this helps and good luck x

Have a look at this page on my web site:-
http://www.costadelsol-vacationrentals.com/Learnspanish.html
You will find some simple Spanish words and phrases there to give you a start plus some books and courses etc. that I think are good, particauly the learn Spanish in your car course which you will see reference to at the bottom of the page.
Also for the conjugation of some of the most common Spanish verbs take a look here:-
http://www.costadelsol-vacationrentals.com/spanish-verbs.html

One really good book, which I find invaluable, is "501 Spanish Verbs."

Good luck, it is a great language to learn.

A boxed set of 8 cds by Michel Thomas Spanish. He is a language teacher and you listen to him teaching two students and you are the third student. You don't have to write anything down, you just listen and learn. The boxed set is expensive (about Seventy pounds). An English/Spanish dictionary is useful.

meeeeeee
Sorry i don't have any suggestions for you,.. i just wanted to say well done you for trying to learn some of the language before going! most people wouldn;t bother and i'm sure your efforts will be apreciated by the locals on your travels!
