You need to be over here to be able to find the jobs, same goes for accomodation. many advertise privately to avoid the paperwork and taxes that go with renting a place out, so need to do things by the back door still....not worth the effort until march/April as things get very quite here on the Costas now until then

Take a holiday to Spain and visit some bars to get the feel of things. Spain is many countries all rolled into one therefore the culture in Spain is very varied and interesting. See http://www.spain4uk.co.uk/Spain_culture.htm for more details.

You should be able to find both on the Costa del Sol but you really need to be over here banging on doors. There are plenty of English bars so Spanish isn't really essential although it is of course very handy.
There are also lots of English owned apts. down here now that the owners want to rent out so if you shop around a bit you will find you can negogiate a reasonable rent.
However I shouldn't bother coming until around Easter as everything is pretty dead at the moment.
