If you had only 4 days, how much time would you spend in Madrid vs Barcelona? |
Considering Wed morning through Sat afternoon: 1 day in one and 3 in the other or split even? (asking obviously only those that have visited both...). Additional Details Into architecture, history, people and uniqueness of the cities. I could stay in both cities for 2 days but am thinking one has more to see than the other. But I am very conflicted!! |

It depends on what you want to do...
I think there is "more" to do in Madrid... but because it is bigger. (it has more expensive things to do than in Barça)
For example you can take a side trip like the person above said.
If you wanted to do something CrAzY then bring your Ski clothes and go to the Snow Zone off the A-5
Visit Primark (And buy lot's of CHEAP clothing) in Xanadú also (A-5)
Vist the Peñalara Nature Reserve, you can also do Bungee Jumping there ! While your there you can visit Manzanares el Real (the Castle was used to film El Cid)
Visit one of the Major or Minor football Stadiums or Basketball stadiums
Along with all the more famous things to do, I wanted to tell you thing's that you might not have known about |

There is a lot more to do in Barcelona than Madrid. If you decide to stay in Madrid for more that one day, you can have a side trip to 'El Escorial' or Toledo (both are close enough to go there and back the same day) . If you are planning to stay only in the city you might want to spend more time in Barcelona. |

For me, in 4 days I would pick one. There's too much to see in each place for me to waste my time traveling between them. Really sink your teeth in to one.
For me, I would pick Barcelona, but I lived there. Barcelona is better for modern art and architecture, food, beaches, nightlife, scenery. Madrid has better art overall and medieval and Renaissance architecture, a nice park near the center. A more historical feel, and more Spanish. Barcelona is more cosmopolitan and, in my opinion, more unique. But you can't lose. Both great places. |

one city.
take your pick.
Don't waste your time traveling between them...not enough time.
You really want almost a minimum of one week per city. |

Living in Barcelona, I'd say spend 4 days in Barcelona :)
However, Madrid has some great museums that you might like to check out, but I don't think it is worth visiting for a single day to do it justice - I'd probably split it evenly as the high speed train between Madrid and Barcelona is 3 hours and you can catch up on your sleep.
When you get to Barcelona you should use the hop on hop off tourist bus. I was surprised at how good it is to get an overview of the city as it takes you to just about all the top attractions so you see "all" of Barcelona, but can hop off to visit things like the Gaudi architecture that will interest you.
As for uniqueness, Barcelona is very much a European city rather than a Spanish city and benefits from that and being on the coast. |
