Go to your local British Embassy or Consulate and get advice

You need to go to the British Embassy in Spain and they will advise you on how to obtain a new passport.
There is one in Madrid below tells you opening hours and address:

and one in Lisbon:

go to the nearest consulate. They should be able to get you a new one. You should probably have been on top of that, but that's what to do...where, exactly, are you? there will be consulates in most major cities. Embassies in Madrid.

Just go the the British embassey. It is no big deal as we are all the EU now.

speric07
Phone the home office / authorities before attempting to get back. So they can advise you accordingly. Do not try to get in without it.

If you are a UK national / citizen the Government has a resposibility to protect you, so your return should be hassle free.

Go to the UK embassy and get it sorted. It will cost you though...a bit more than if you were doing it in the UK.

Bye! bye! Just let the government know. They will throw you out anyways.I don't think emergency visa will work.
Now think about an illegal way.

You'll have to go to the embassy to see if they'll grant you a new passport. alternatively, you could always go to the airport and act dumb and try your luck, they might just let you through and either have pity or just not notice. That way you can get a new passport in England and save a ton of cash.

ihrobin
If you are a British National; you shouldn't be needing a Visa to travel to an from Spain.

If you are not from a EU country, look for your country's embassy or High Commission in Madrid. Go seek their help ASAP. They shoud be able to provide you with a new passport or at least an adhoc document. You can then go to the Spanish Foreign office in Madrid an get a Visa on that doc.

Mat G.
Get a new passport.

Embassies are to promote British interests in a foreign country. It is the Consulates which provide services to UK citizens. Sometimes these are housed in the same building as the Embassy but in the case of Paris at least the Embassy is this huge impressive building whereas the consulate was a tacky little office on the third floor of an apartment building a few hundred metres away if I remember rightly. I would suspect that Madrid would be the same. If not in Madrid you may find that there is a Consulate much nearer to hand and they should be able to issue a temporary passport or other emergency travel document.

it's inside the EU, so you will need no visa. As far as I know, you only need the passport if you go by plane... but if you take the train (Eurostar) or the Eurotunnel, you don't need a passport as far as I know. But I'm not 100% sure... so maybe you should just phone the train company...or call the airport and tell them your problem...or you could call your local municipality from Spain.
