In Madrid where can I find the following...? |
1) Marzipan - not those cute little marzipan shapes, not marzipan turrĂłn, but ready to roll marzipan for cake decorating (marzipan de obrador)? Last Xmas I searched bakeries, supermarkets, and even took a trip to Toledo, but no luck and in the end I asked some visitors to bring some over. This year I expect no visitors from the UK between now and Christmas. HOW WILL I ICE MY CHRISTMAS CAKE?
2) Fresh milk. Not UHT, but pasteurized. Mercadona does a high pasturized milk, which is alright... and trekking out to the Carrefour in Tres Cantos, you can get pasturized milk made in Colmenar el Viejo which is nice, but Tres Cantos is a quite a way out of the centre. Which super markets sell the best pasteurized milk?
3) Fresh Cream, whipping cream, double cream even sour cream (which I am currently substituting with Greek Yogurt)...Where can I get fresh cream from in Madrid. Once I found it stocked in the Corte Ingles de Orense, but it never made a repeat appearence. My merengues and brandy cakes just aren't the same which UHT cream, and I have resorted to mixing it with mascarpone , but even so. Can anyone tell me where in Madrid I can buy fresh cream. (Sometimes yuo find cream in supermarket fridges, that is packaged to look fresh, but in the small print its JUST UHT :-( ) |

Your best bet is to go to English or American supermarkets. Try The Food Hall in San Sebastian de los Reyes, which you can reach by Metro www.thefoodhall.es or Taste of America in c/Serrano. Once you've been here a while you'll get to know the placesthat stock the stuff you want. I go to the Food Hall every so often and stock up on things from the UK I miss. |
