No, usually in hispanic countries women don't change their last name because of tradition and family pride. If a woman get married she will incorporate her husband's last name to hers. For example, if Mary Gonzales marries Alfred Mendez; her married name will be Mary Gonzales de Mendez. The preposition "de" (english = of) is added before the husband's last name in sign of compromise. Although i think that when this started, "de" was added as a sign of belonging. In Hispanic countries there's also the tradition of keeping both of your parents last names. So if you are the kid of Mary Gonzales and Alfred Mendez, you'll be Pepito Mendes Gonzales :p I hope my answer satisfies your doubt. |

In Spain, the people use 2 last names. the first one is the father first last name and the second one is the mother first last name .
Fror example if know someone called Garcia Perez you know that the mother is commig for the Perez family and the father is from the Garcia family |

NO.
One good reason for the two surnames is that there are not all that many Spanish surnames in Spain. It is a bit like Wales! There are loads of Sanchez, Gonzalez and so on and most women are called Maria. (Maria de).
It is nice that children carry the names of both parents. Why should they change on marriage?
The Prime Minister, JosĂ© Luis RodrĂguez Zapatero calls himself Mr Zapatero, (perhaps to avoid confusion with 'El Puma!), so this adds to foreign confusion..
I have a friend, who works in the States and has given up and calls himself by his mother's name to avoid confusion. Picasso did the same so perhaps he had the same problem.
I don't understand the thumbs downs. Perhaps the person concerned can explain.
Spain is different. and long may it continue being so. |

I Spain you cannot change your name legally even if you want to. If you marry you keep exactly the same name and the children take both.
ex.
mother Carmen Perez
father Juan Ramos
child Miguel Ramos Perez
so every Spanish person has 2 surnames and it is the first one which is passed down to the children
I am Scottish and live in Spain.I usually have problems when dealing with paperwork here and would probably taken my husbands surname if i could have to save problems, but can,t |

Normally a woman does not change her surnames upon marriage. Everyone male or female has two surnames (sometimes more) the first is their fathers surname and their second surname is their mothers surname. As an example if Mary Brown married John Smith, their children would have the surname Smith Brown. Some women choose to add their husbands surname to their own but it is unusual. |

The woman generally doesn´t change unless she wants to and the children from the union carry both surnames..usually the Father´s followed by the Mother´s. Example Maria Perez marries Martin Delgado. the kids would be called Pablo Delgado Perez. |
