Catral has been slated recently because they are in big trouble due to illegal building of new properties. There are other areas in Spain that have also been effected by greedy mayors, town halls, builders etc but catral has over 4000 supposedly. If you are thinking of buying or investing in the Catral area....DON'T! I am an estate agent working in the areas that cover from Santa Pola to Torrevieja and beyond, I read, write and speak fluent Spanish and work with alot of town halls, so I do know what I'm talking about.
In fact we know of a friends mother who purchased in that area who is in deep s..t now. She may lose her home AND have to pay the fine which is 100,000€. You have been warned.
Aside from the onslaught I have just given regarding property there, Catral is a small Spanish town, mainly farmers and people working the land, not a very pretty place, but there are quite alot of foreigners living in and around that area. Even Spanish are wary of buying new houses in Catral now, so that says something.
There will be local bus links around the town, but to get out anywhere else you will need a car if you wish to go further afield.
Please do not come on an inspection trip with "the big boys" and be seduced by the wining and dining whilst they badger you over the dinner table. Come here to the area whilst you have time to look around and relax, take in the atmosphere and see if you like it first.
I personally think these days it may be safer buying or investing in a resale other than new.
After all, whether it be 5000, or 150000 of your money it's still hard earned at the end of the day!!
If you want any further info please don't hesitate to mail me.
Kind regards. |

Catral is a farming community in the Vega Baja area of the Costa Blanca, not far from Torrevieja, Almoradi, Rojales and Elche. There is a fairly large international presence there. It depends what area of investment you are interested in as to whether there is anything of interest to you. I would like however, to warn you of any property investments that you might be considering. There are many properties in an unfinished state out in the countryside of Catral which are totally illegal builds. Some people have paid for their new houses only to have them bulldozed by the authorities. Many more are currently court cases. All this under the eyes of the local mayor and town hall. They have been basically been building on farmland which is protected. The mayor says he did not know that it was happening (yeah right), and he is now also under investigation by the regional authorities. I just wonder what the solicitors were doing while representing their clients.
I don't want to sound overly negative, it is a lovely area, but check anything you get into very carefully. Good luck! |
