Ok, this is a pretty general question, but I hope this information helps:

Transportation.-use the subway-metro- and local buses -they are painted in red-, they reach almost any point in the city. you can buy a 10 ride ticket for about 6.50 euros, or even a tourist pass for 1,3 or 7 days, if you want. The subway starts at 6am and closes at 1am, but there are night bus routes that will take you basically anywhere.

Shopping.- Both for souvenirs and for clothes, I would recommend the area of Sol-Preciados-Carmen (subway stop: Sol) which has a lot of stores like Zara, H&M, Pimkie... as well as souvenirs stores where you could get some presents. Also in this area, you will find a very famous department store: El Corte Ingles, where you can basically buy anything, from a cd to a motorbike. On Sundays, you can go to El Rastro, which is a street market in the 'La Latina' neighborhood, but be aware of people trying to get your wallet or handbag.

Tourism: Visit El Retiro -big park with lots of things to do, and lot of street performers-, el Prado if you like paintings -tip: it's free on Sundays, but get there early!-, el Palacio Real -old royal palace-, the Plaza Mayor -there's a tourism office in there! and emblematic monuments such as La Cibeles or La Puerta de Alcal'a. All these places are fairly close, but you better get good walking shoes!

Safety: it's a fairly safe city except for some areas -big bus stations or subway stations, specific neighborhoods, etc-. Be careful with your wallet or handbag when there are lots of people around you.

Nightlife: definitely worth going out at night, you will see lots of people having a drink with their friends or going for 'tapas' from one bar to another. Parties won't start until 11pm -the earliest ones- and some pubs won't close until 8am next day. Drinking age is 18.

Hope you have a great time in there. Don't hesitate to ask something else if you need to :)

For visit the city centre the best option is the subway, open at 6 am and the last train pass at 1:45 am.

I recommend that you visit the Retiro park: Palacio de cristal, the devil statue and the square of the pond ( the sunday the people play the drums here). The Puerta de Alcalá, the city centre...

At the night the bars and pubs usually close at 4:00 am, but there are some pubs that close at the morning, in this pubs you must pay for enter.

I hope you can understand me.

the best I can give you.
Interested in art? El Prado is a MUST.
Shopping? Best (and expensive) stores are next to El Prado.
From Puerta del Sol (center of the Iberian peninsula leave three turist bus lines. The day ticket is valid on all three lines. Do it!
After arrival contact the turist office. They give you more informations than you can work on, including night life.
