Interested in a potential move to one of the Spanish islands.? |
What is the high season in for example, the Canaries? We would like to move at the best time for us both to secure job (retail and restaurant) and good living quarters. Thank you. Any other info you may have is GREATLY appreciated. |

I lived in the Canaries (Tenerife) for 4 years and moved back to the Uk 2 years ago.
I would not recommend moving out there at the moment.
Most of the people that I knew out there have moved back, even people who had been out there 20+ years.
I still have friends out there who work in retail, bar and restaurants, entertainers and other lines of work. All of them a painting the same bleak picture, bars and hotels closing at a fast rate. No tourists and wages dropping all the time. I personally know a popular restaurant manager who is now working as a potwash as the place she managed closed down and theres no work to get any where else.
There are still many illegal immigrants turning up in boats and as there normal ways of making money are disappearing the crime rates are going through the roof as mugging and street crime becomes the only way to make money for many.
As for high season, well tourism used to be good all year, bit busier in the summer and Christmas but no one is holding out much hope this year. The best jobs always used to go just before easter, i was lucky and had the same job all the time i was there.

Thats a link for jobs, as you can see all the catering jobs have dried up.
As for what you call living quarters I hope you don't think you get accomodation with a job. It's up to you to find your own place to live.I was paying 500 euros a month for a 1 bed duplex on an ok complex. I would imagine that will have gone up now and with the euro and £ on parity you may find yourself paying out more that you would to rent in the UK. Do your homework, find property agencies and secure somewhere to live. |

The Canary Islands, Andalusia and Catalonia are in fact, the most afected areas by the recesion, and the areas with highest unemployment in Spain.
It won't be easy for you to find a job. |

good luck! No such thing as secure jobs these days. Lots of people unemployed. I HAVE, however, heard that the Canaries are less hit by the recession. |

We live in Tenerife after moving back here from Lanzarote and have been in the Canaries 15 years now. Lanzarote is really quiet just now and it will be quite hard to get a job just now. Tenerife is just as bad I'm afraid. One of my friends who has lived here 21 years and speaks fluent Spanish can't get a job and she's tried everywhere I think...shops, offices, hotels etc and there's nothing going. You may get bar work but it definitely wouldn't be secure however the good point is that there are loads of apartments for rent due to people having to move back to the UK and not being able to sell! I should know, my house in Lanzarote has been on the market for two years now and we've dropped the price by 70,000!!! On the radio this morning though (Spanish radio) they reckon the recession will finish here at the end of the year. As for the high season....the winter is getting slightly busier than the summer now but if i was you, i'd wait until the recession is over, it's better to know before you make the move that a move to the Canaries at this moment in time isn't going to be easy....oh and wages have gone down and rents have gone up! The average bar wage is about 800€ a mnnth and rent would be about 500€ for a one bed apartment! |
