On general terms Barcelona is as safe as any other large city..
I visit there as often as I can (I live in southern Spain).
As in any metropolis, watch where you go at late night. Other than that, just watch your purse wherever you go....Don't hang it on the back of a chair.
Basrcelona is a magnificent city to visit and to live there too!

Like Abuela Nanny said be careful where you leave your bag and keep a good hold on it when using the crowded metro. If you make yourself an obvious "guiri" (the negative reference to foreigners) you are an easier mark sometimes. People say to avoid "La Mina" so I have. Apart from that I've loved living in the Barcelona area for the last 18 years and look forward to many more.

I've lived in Barcelona for 5 years and have never experienced a crime. However, that doesn't mean there isn't any - the Ramblas, Plaça Reial and Sants Station are all notorious for pickpocketing.
What I would say is that as long as you are careful you´ll be ok. Don´t flaunt anything too expensive, keep bags, cameras and mobile phones close to you and fastened.
Violent crime is far less frequent than somewhere like the UK for instance, but there are occasionly riots, which you´re better avoiding.
