Is Sitges in Spain really worth considering to purchasing a holiday home? |

I visited Sitges for the first time last spring, and was very pleasantly impressed. It is a very touristic area, but it has retained the charm of the spanish (or rather catalonian) village. The food is excellent, the people were charming, and it's close enough (about an hours drive) to Barcelona to go there for shopping or a special outing. I wouldn't mind living in that area at all. (my husband and I live in the south in Mijas-Costa near Marbella), and we are considering moving north when he retires. |

I'm spanish and I live pretty close to Sitges. Sitges is a nice place, really touristic(good and bad at the same time), with lots of beaches, like 11 or so, some of them even nudist.
It's not that big, around 30,000 inhabitants, but with a lot of second-residents (holiday houses I guess in english, lol), so in summer and weekends gets far more crowded. It has a toll-highway and train connection to Barcelona. It's only 45 minutes away. Even closer to BCN airport which is in in the way to Barcelona.
Sitges has also one of the most famous carnivals in Spain, and the international cinema festival. It's also known as a gay friendly city, with lots of gay bars. They are all in the same area so depending on how you are, can go always there, sometimes or never. It's obviously no a problem at all.
The bad point is that is REALLY expensive. Even more expensive than Barcelona itself. Well, being expensive also makes it more exclusive so it can be a good point.
One think I recommend, never buy a house before checking the house itself and the area yourself so you can decide whether you like it or not. It's a huge business to sell spanish properties, especially next to the sea, to foreigners (mainly british). The realtor may be british but don't let them trick you with the friendly "we are from the same country and I'm here to help you". It's a business for them. Some houses in Spain (less than 1% but still) are built illegally so check in the city council and/or with a lawyer than your property is fully legal.
In conclusion, yes it's worth purchasing a house in Sitges but check everything yourself and make sure everything is legal. Good luck! |
