From the airport, you just walk into the train station and take the train to the city center. There will probably be plenty people on the streets. Have fun in Barcelona!

It is insanely safe compared to any US city at that time of night. Also, a bit of Spanish is just as useless as English, because most native Barcelonans speak Catalan as their preferred language. You'll notice that all the signs are in Catalan or in both Spanish and Catalan. You can get a Catalan-English phrase book for free in the city and really impress your friends back home.
