Yes it is true, our health care system is pretty much like in canada, you dont need to be a citizen or a resident, if you need medical attention its free, anything: from a cold, to a heart surgery.
Im Spanish.
And for all of you who say we pay more taxes in Spain, your wrong... somehow we pay less taxes than here in the states.
I also have a friend who is epileptic... his medicine for this disease in spain for three months costs around 5 euros (less than ten dollars), he had to buy some medication here, and even thought he is american and has a great insurance, the cost for one month medication was 75 dollars... |

Yes, most developed countries are like that. We don't have that here because the government has allowed the medical corperorations into scaring the public into believeing that if we made it free, the industry would collapse.
Another one for you - in most European countries - College is free too. (or very low cost) ... see what we could do if we spent less time wageing war, and more time taking care of ourselves. |

Yes, it is free for spanish citizens. We have a health system based on taxes. It has the same quality than the private system, but usually by the public you have to wait some months for getting surgery or similar. |

If you go to the emergency room they cannot refuse you treatment no matter what your status. I was visiting someone in a public/state hospital a couple years ago and their roommate was Irish and spoke no Spanish (we helped her). She happened to be in Madrid for a "hen party" ("ladies trip" or bachelorette party) when she had a kind of attack. She was given an operation although she wasn't a resident or paying taxes in Spain. She did, however, have some kind of insurance in Ireland which partially paid the expense. But it wouldn't have mattered. She'd probably still have gotten the same treatment.
The difference is, if you have a cold or if you need regular prescription medications you cannot schedule an appointment with a doctor for consultation if you don't have a medical card (because you have residence). But medical care in Spain is shockingly cheap compared to other countries like the USA.
And even for residents it's not exactly "FREE". Residents pay higher taxes (like in Canada and England) so that their medical care is taken care of at no additional cost. Prescription medication here in Spain is incredibly cheap too - if you're a resident.

Wow i have never been and i looked in to see what you
meant, i hope this is true, every Country has its pluses
or minuses, but having been in Australia since childhood
i am starting to buck at the unfairness we are receiving in
Taxes and high cost of Medical Care for everyone, Insurance
too here is a huge rip off like all the above mentioned.
This would be great to happen here. I also here that in
Italy, all disabilities treatment and many government uses
are free for these people and in some instances their
families in Italy and have been since years and years
ago....why are our disabled people here expected to go
to work and don't get enough free treatment and housing.? |

yeah that is if you have a mandatory surgery if the surgery is elective like gall stones then you have to wait months even years...you go around with gall stones..spain's healthcare is not shangri-la |

Medical emergencies are free of charge in Spain, but there are (few) voices claiming that a fee is needed to avoid the overuse from many people who visit that service without a real emergency reason. |

I don't think that is correct.
She may be speaking of Spain citizens, not tourists. |

Not sure. You should go to spain yahoo answers and ask the question.
Just have some one to translate your question in spanish and send it.
Then you can just go to the translation generators and read their response. |

I'm pretty sure that's 1) if you're a citizen of spain, and 2) you pay taxes and other assorted things... |

I'm pretty sure that in most of the countries that have socialized medecine, they no longer cover tourists. It used to be true that you could go to any doctor for free in UK, and get medicines for 1 pound, but that isn't true anymore, according to what I've heard, and I've heard that people from EU countries who paid their insurance all their lives, and live in Spain, now, have to pay insurance, there, to be covered. I'm pretty sure you are only covered if you have insurance. |

Not true. Their medical system is similar to that of the United States. Make sure you have your own medical(travel) insurance before you go. |

There is no such thing as free surgery, if you don't pay that means the state pays and recovers the cost through taxes. When you have state run medicine the quality usually goes down |

ha ha ha ha ha no that's not true only for Spanish covered residents of that country or if you have travel insurance ha ha |
