Yes it is true. Hours can vary, but generally the closing times are 2-4 year round and 2-5pm in the summer because of the heat. Of course, that will vary by region and the store owner. All banking must be done in the morning tho, so plan ahead. However, I *have* noticed that some of the more trendy shops have started staying open through lunch (Zara, Pull & Bear etc). Look for signs in the windows that say "Abierto Mediodia" (Open Mid-day). |

Here in Cadiz, stores close about 2 and reopen around 5 or 6. This is in both summer and winter. |

Same is true in the Philippines (colonized by Spain for 300 years) so I guess it must be true. |

Yes, it is true that inmost of Spain, the stores close up for siesta. Others have given you the typical hours for their regions. In AndalucĂa, you may notice that some shops don't re-open, even though they officially should, because the owner just didn't feel like it. They tend to have a very relaxed attitude towards such things...depends on the owner, of course.
Banks don't re-open. Bank hours end at 1:00.
Flea Markets often close up between 1 and 2:00 as well.
Same is true in Mexico. |

Most stores close from 1 or 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., it's not due to siesta, at least, not just for siesta, but to have lunch, I think. |

Here in Málaga the shops close at 2pm and reopen at 4pm. Some businesses close at 1pm and start again at 3.30pm. Schools are all finished each day by 1.30pm - 2pm. The Spanish like to have their main meal with the whole family, also in summer here the temperature can get into the 40c´s and it's too hot to work.
The fact that everything closes down has no affect on anyone because there is no need to shop at that time of day. |

Yes, generally they close about 1pm and reopen at about 4-5 until later that evening. This applies both to summer and winter. |
