Is spain really that bad? |
My parents and family are all European but we now live in Canada. I want to go to university in either Spain(Barcelona)/Germany(Munich). I'm more interested in Spain because of the different culture. I've already been to Germany, and although its not that different it kind of reminds me of Canada.
Anyway I know Spain's economy is AS great as Germanys, but is it really that bad? I'm sure times have changed since my parents lived in Europe 15 years ago. Additional Details sorry I mean I've heard spains economy ISNT as great as germany.
Yeah I don't mean to offend anyone..I love Europe it's just my parents that insist that Germany is better. I've always thought they were equal, but then again I've never been to Spain so I was hoping someone living there could let me know. Thanks. |

If your parents are thinking that Spain is kinda backward...those days have long past. They have the same sort of economy as the rest of Europe. I was very surprised at how clean/green/modern (as in ahead of the US!) they are, now...I had lived there thirty years ago. It is a perfectly modern country, and very industrialized.
If they are thinking about the current economic slump, well, Spain is having a bit of a struggle right now, but as a student, that should work in your favor...better exchange rates, and possibly lower rents, and all....I would say definitely consider it!
(and I love Spain....Way more than Germany! But I haven't been there since the reunification...things may be different there, as well!) |

"Anyway I know Spain's economy is AS great as Germanys, but is it really that bad?". What do you mean sunshinecoast? It's kind of confusing.
Both Germany and Spain are strong, modern and liberal economies, comparable to Canada. As a matter of fact, they are both bigger economy-wise than Canada.
You make Europe sound like a developing continent, when it's one of the most highly developed places on Earth. |

I have never lived in Germany but have lived in Valencia for nearly four years and love it! It all depends on what part of Spain to decide to go but here in the mountains the pace of life is just right, the weather is glorious (a little chilly in the winter!), the people have got to be the happiest people alive, my kids love their life here. BUT it hasn´t been easy. The economy is battling, just like everywhere else, but also the language is quite a big hurdle. We have managed to get this far and learn as we have gone along (my kids are all fluent now) but it is a very important factor in your choice!
Good luck with whatever you do but always remember, Spain has more fiestas than Germany and just like with everything else they do here, they ´fiesta´ very well!!! |

The German economy is under strain at the moment, between the reunification nearly 20 years ago and the current climate, times are tough in Germany.
If offered your choice, I would go for Spain, particularly Barcelona. It's a wonderful place. Not saying that Munich isn't wonderful, but Barcelona is beside the sea. A huge plus in my book. |

The world is in financial turmoil so I don't know how your parents can judge anyones economy on recent events, nobody knows how this lot will turn out.All I can say is Barcelona is a beautiful city and the spaniards are lovely people.Your choice. |

Well the whole world is in crisis at the moment. Other than that, Spain's GDP is smaller to that of Germany but larger to that of Canada. But that means nothing. The standard of living is about the same all around Europe. Old Europe at least. |

We're the 8th largest economy of the world, and we have an high standard of living, but as the Western World, we're now in economical crisis. I don't think the situation is worse than in other western countries.
It's true there are "less" economical development and more unemployment, but it doesn't turn us a third world country!!! lol
I think Spain is a good country to live in.
BTW, I'm from Spain :) |

I'm British but now live in Spain. I've travelled all over Europe. I've travelled all over North America. Every country I've been to I have loved. It really is a personal choice.
I've lived in Spain for a number of years now. The cost of living is cheaper than anywhere in Europe. The weather is great. We never get a frost, unlike Germany which get very cold winters. Spain is a relaxed country to live. The people are more relaxed, the food is great and Spain has the highest life expectancy in Europe.
Eventually the world will come out of recession. Some countries quicker than others. It's up to you to decide where to go. By all means, listen to your friends and relatives. However, you are the one that is going. You should make it YOUR choice. |

I have lived in Spain on & off for over a year. Depending on where you go specifically, it is definitely a great place to live &/or study. Its a great opportunity to practice the language and live a leisurely life style. Every city has historical significance and sights to see. Major cities have plenty of public transportation and there are trains that can take you to basically any other city. There really isn't anything "bad" I can say about Spain. Economically speaking, every major country is suffering-not just Spain so I don't think that is the best way to determine where you will spend the next few years of your life. Give it a lot of thought though. I live in southern Spain so here is a website for you to check out. Good Luck!

the reality is that Spain is not as bad as your parents say but the truth esuque the German economy is better than española.ya that the average salary of a German is 3,000 euros and the average salary of a Spanish is 1,500 euros. .
In my opinion any of the countries of the European Union is good to live and to study |

The economy should not be a determinant of your choice, because both Germany's and Spanish economy are not now on their best moments. And the crisis is being as big there than here, but, as it is obvious, Germany is a step beyond on economy than Spain.
( about what another user said about Euro, he should know that it is used in both countries).
The studies are going to be also identical next year because they are now being adapted in all European countries to make them equal.
(supposing that you are going to study at University)
The main advantage about living in Spain may be the quality of life, not in terms of economy, but of happiness and health.
The worst point, the language.
ANYWAY, YOU HAVE TO MAKE THE CHOICE, DONT LET ANYBODY TRY TO INFLUENCE YOU, NEITHER YOUR PARENTS, YOUR FRIENDS OR YAHOO-A USERS.
I HOPE YOU BE HAPPY WHEREVER YOU GO. |

well everyones economy is bad right now and getting worse
watch the news
but Spain's problem is they wont admit to it
there Mrtg problem is as bad as UK and USA and unemployment is high
not to mention they use the euro so im not sure about Canadian money bus USD you lose 25% of your money when using Euro
but dont let that discourage you visit for a while and see how you like it its best if you have family and know the language

Spain now,as almost all the European countries (and also USA) is having crisis. The bank interest (Euribor) is going up,and it´s effecting the family economy a lot,as almost all of us pay mortgages. So I don´t think it´s a good moment to move to Spain now,not really.
But if you just come to study, not to saty here, then why not?
Everything has gone up so much since the Euro started, that it´s difficult for a typical Spanish family to reach the end of the month without difficulties.Nothing´s easy. |
