Is this illegal? Would a guy from Spain be attracted to a foreign girl? |
is it realistic to think that any man in Spain would ever want an American woman?
Just wanted to clarify that:
I would NEVER marry someone for the purpose of getting CITIZENSHIP... but there are some hot guys over there. I can see myself loving one of them. Nothing wrong with American guys but the whole notion of marrying the someone from your own culture seems so boring. I don't want to have an ordinary life and marry the guy next door.
When I say "for a Spanish citizen to marry an American citizen" I do NOT mean "marry someone just so you can get Spanish citizenship."
I saw on the boards that someone wrote in and said that "this is a very serious crime and is punishable by a jail sentence."
Is it illegal for ANY foreigner to marry any Spanish citizen for ANY reason... or is it simply illegal to marry expressly for citizenship purposes?
I'm really excited about going to Spain to visit because it's a beautiful country and there are really handsome guys there
*Sigh* who am I kidding? None of those hot guys would give an American girl the time of day... am I dreaming?
But, hypothetically, is it legal to marry (for the sake of marrying them, period)?
Thanks. Gracias de antemano Additional Details I'd rather live in Spain than USA... it's just so magical. I would think he would be unhappy in the states, I'm an American and I would be happier in Spain... just wanted to clarify I have no ulterior motives. |

My daughter is English and we moved here to Spain 19 years ago, she is now married to a wonderful Spanish guy from Andalucia (we actually live on the Costa Blanca though) and my grand daughter is now 7. We all speak Spanish and English at home, cook both types of foods and enjoy our life.
Plenty of Spaniards marry foreigners of all kinds because of love (Iike my daughter). She still has a UK passport, and my grand daughter has a Spanish one.
But there is a new law that says children born from 2 parents from other countries other than Spain will automatically be given the same`passport as their parents and not Spanish as previously was.
My daughter has no intention ever of returning to the UK, so she is just about to start to change her nationalisation to Spanish, it is very hard, you have to do a mountain of paperwork and it takes 2 years or so, but she is in no hurry. Her reason to change is that she feels more Spanish now than British.
When we came here my daughter did not envisage falling for a Spanish guy and visa versa, but it happens (and we are all so glad it did)
Incidentally, if we could have emigrated easily into the US we would have loved to have done so.....so maybe we all think the grass is greener somewhere else when it may not be.
Come to Spain hon, enjoy your stay, learn a little Spanish and who knows you may end up living here like we did. |

HUH??? No no no, that law was put into place because people were going to coutries like afganistan and getting paid like 50,000 dollars to marry a guy and bring him to america to be a citizen then divorce and do it again. Hence taking advantage of the system. You are free to marry whoever you want weather it be a guy from Spain or Somolia.
Also...I find it hard to believe that a Spaniard would want to come live in the US. I've been to Spain a few times and its AWESOME there, beautiful, very nice people, great culture, great weather, its like Mexico but more advanced, cleaner, and with European flavour. But I do think its totally possible a Spaniard would want an American girl. Just like I'd want a Hungarian or Czech girl. So long story short, even if you did marry him and he wanted to move to the US, you would have to go thru a LONG and difficult process of paperwork and providing proof to the government to convince them that the marrige was not for monetary gains or conveniance and that it was real. If the guy from spain is named Ackmed Al Bin Hassim and wants to pay you 100k to get married and come to America....you should run like hell hahahaha |

Yes, of course it is legal. I've never even heard of a country that doesn't allow its citizens to marry foreigners (in real valid marriages). |

you can marry a foreigner and you can gain citizenship from that. While it is true that marrying for this sole purpose is illegal marrying for love is totally legal and there is nothing they can do to stop you. Now when and if you try to apply for citizenship expect your marriage to come under a microscope and for them to question you about it. Especially if it is a quick thing. One thing I can tell you is that you definitely should not rush into anything like that. Other than for the obvious reasons you also must realize that the cultures are completely different and you need to make sure that you know what you are getting yourself into. There are still some country's out there that the wife is the property of the husband. I'm not saying that spain is like that at all but just making a point that there are differences in cultures around the world. Best of luck in your search for love and hopefully you'll find it. |

Ummm. NO. Not illegal.
Yeah...happens all the time.
I lived in Spain some time ago, and among 300 or so 20 something university students (mostly female), almost ALL the women left at the end of a year, engaged. Yeah. The men were attracted to American women.
Check through the archive questions...quite a few from American women marrying Spanish guys.
Yeah, marrying someone without the rest of the package, ONLY to get citizenship...actually, I don't think you can get citizenship, only the equivalent of a "Green card" in the US, is illegal...It's illegal in the US, too! The penalty for "green card marriage" in the US is generally deportation.
Not sure what the penalty is in Spain.
But the penalty is NOT for being attracted, falling in love, or becoming engaged...it's for marrying to get legal status only.
oh! And I understand that you can marry, and STILL not get work legality for some time.
And, yeah, some really handsome men there. Think Antonio Banderas! (drool!) |
