Life for educated black people in spain??? ? |
Hi all,
Ok some background, I'm a black female british lady, who holds a law &sociology degree from a top 5 university in the uk. ...so im educated.
I really really want to live in spain because from my weekend breaks there (barcelona, marbella for a month) I love their way of live, culture, vibe, FOOD, friendliness etc
Each time i've been there i've never experience any real racism, but i've heard of people who have.
So my question is, what is life like for black educated/professionals in spain. Can black people get professional jobs or promoted. Do they face open hostility. Are they welcomed into the social fabric.
I would love any answers, experiences either direct, in direct (lets say a friend of a Friend) because spain is somewhere where i can really see myself ...i think. I just want a rough idea of what life would be like for me there.
In particular, im thinking of living in barcelona or madrid.
Muchas Gracias !!!! xxxx

It is a looooong time since I lived in Spain...but I was back recently for a visit. When I lived there, there was an American woman, black (very dark complected) who was director of a program of students. She was treated (to the best of my knowledge) very well, and as an equal. One of her students had some less than pleasant experiences, like children looking up at her and screaming in terror, but while perplexing, nothing violent or terribly hurtful.
That was back when Spain could have been considered a "developing country".
Nowadays, I would say that Spain is an EXTREMELY advanced country...they could teach the US some things about being green and all. HOWEVER, I DID notice some prejudice on this last trip...mostly about illegal immigration...not JUST Moroccans selling stuff, but "boat people" who cross the Mediterranean and sneak into the country without any papers, (from many countries) and then bother people doing their own thing with bootleg dvds, and Moroccan bags, and belts, and knockoff designer stuff...you name it. They also seem to have a problem with these people being vagrants, homeless, and stealing...up to having quite the racket going.
I love the comment about the football matches...as if that sort of thing doesn't happen in Britain! Yeah, I have heard that they can be pretty mean to football players, but I'm not sure that isn't simply because they are picking on a really good player from the other team...(fans will do that anywhere).
As for the professional/advancement/treatment in the workplace, I would hope that you could get along...keeping in mind that preference in hard times goes to the citizens, over foreigners, even though with a British passport you are legal, you still might run up against trouble because of your nationality....Good luck! (try Sevilla, too. my fave) |

Some Spanish can be very anti South American/Moroccan,that`s about it apart from the north south dislikes,,whilst I lived in Spain I had Moroccan, Colombian and Spanish friends, but in a city like Barcelona you`ll be just fine, |

It's generally not the people who are not liked here because of the color of their skin it is the Moroccon who are annoying you trying to sell you things everywhere you walk =/ I'm not black but I have never seen racisum in my country also !
and if you do get refered to it's not to be racest... it is because like some football players might get called Black or somthing... everyone says OH NO ... =/ Call me white should I say oh no ! ? =O I'm white !! I'm so upset how could you say such a thing o_O
Any city will be more diverse anyway than a small little town in Valencia... but I'm not sure why questions on here are alway's related to Spanish as being racest... |

I have never been to Spain, but I would think twice about living there if I were you. There are racist thugs who shout the most vile abuse at black footballers during matches. I am not sure whether they would behave like that when not at a football match, but I wouldn't want to take that chance. |

the developing world do seem to take a long time in catching up to the rest of the world. In this case, Spain is a developing country. |

Plan well ahead what do you want, the Spaniards are a very racist and ignorant people, and I am sure you will face discrimination finding a job due your skin colour. Just be careful |
