You will have a great time! Your family Might be a little more protective than your real family, but you still will have a good time.
Don't have any idea what coolkid is going on about. Did you have any problem figuring out that the language is Spanish? and why would you need to rent a flat? (in fact, I don't think a 16 year old is even LEGAL to rent a flat, if you wanted to).
In September, they will be just starting classes for the new school year, and you will probably get to go to classes and participate in whatever they do around that. If you have a "sister" your age, you will probably be encouraged to join in her activities. (might be a bit less so, if you have a "brother", and I don't know how people arrange things when they don't have youngsters the age of the exchange student...that will depend on the family.
In the cities, most people live in flats, or apartments, and there are few actual houses: seperated homes, like we have in the suburbs in the US...don't know what your living situation is, but that was something I noted...few individual homes until you get way out in the rural areas.
Youngsters spend long evenings out hanging with friends...they don't often spend time in each others homes, but rather out at public places. And in Spain, people tend to stay up VERY late. It may be a bit of an adjustment.
Other than that, though, they generally live pretty much the same as most teenagers...going out to movies and discos, etc. Drinking age (every 16 year old seems to want to know this) is actually 18, there. I can't say how strict they are, because it never mattered to me. When I was 20, there was no drinking age and now, well, let's just say, they don't check me any longer. :)

The language
Castilian Spanish is the official language in all nation (in a 73%). There are also other languages equally official in the respective autonomous communities: such as, Catalán (in a 24%) is the official language of Cataluña and in Baleares; Valenciano (in a 3 %), in the Community of Valencia; Gallego, in Galicia, and Basque (in a 3%), in the Basque Country. Although not official, there are also in England other languages used by a minority of people. They are Bable or Asturiano, Leonés, Aragonés and Aranés. English and French are also spoken at big hotels and tourists’ areas.
Renting a flat
If you want to rent a flat, you should have a look at all housing sections in the local newspapers. You will also find useful the advertisements placed in some shops, like pubs or bakeries. University faculties’ boards are also useful in this sense and newspapers with ads by words too.
In the case that all these searches do not work, you should contact a real state agency. They will surely provide you with a solution, with an advanced payment of their established commission. |
