Madrid and Barcelona's New year day and 6 January? |
Hi ,my wife and i will visit madrid during the new year day and on the 6 january we will be in barcelona, are all the shops close during these 2 holidays and any place of interest we can visit, is there any christmas market open ?

=) I know some Carrefour stores ´NOW´ open on 1st January... but generally across Spain most things shut... in my town except for the Hypermarkets most thing's shut for the whole holiday =)
But in Madrid and Barça I'm sure you'll find some thing's open... but more chance on the 1st than the 6th in my oponion because that is the day we celebrate the ´Magi´ giving Jesús their gifts =)
I think Barça has a Christmas market.. but I'm not sure... the Castellano/Spanish word for Christmas market is Mercado navideño =) so if you see that word you'll know it is open.
In Barça & Madrid I'd say many bars ect, will be open on the 2nd 3rd 4th 5th so you'll have somthing to do in those days... the toursit attracations that don't close in winter like the Museum's I think WILL be closed though... but I don't know I live in the North where thing's are more tradional than in the large cities =) |

Hello. I studied in Madrid. I found that any major holiday, the shops, even Madrid shut down. There will be plenty of festivals/restaurants will be open. |

Hi, I live in Madrid and during the holidays, shops are going to be closed but there´s plenty of things you can do instead. For instance, lots of bars and restaurants will be open so you´ll be able to enjoy Madrid´s fantastic social life. This year we decided to celebrate New Year´s Eve at Ottocento. A charming restaurant in Chueca that I totally recommend!

Well I can´t speak for Barcelona but Madrid has plenty happening around the new year. Most of the tourist attractions will be open (albeit with reduced hours) as will the sightseeing buses (1st Jan is a gret day to do that due to less traffic) and of course the bars and restaurants.
I would suggest you go to the Puerta del Sol (metro Sol) for the night of the 31st dec and enjoy the tradition of eating grapes to the chimes. Before taking a couple of drinks (alcoholic or not) in Plaza Santa Ana or Plaza Mayor. Treat Jan 1st as a "lazy day" where you can either walk the city or do the sightseeing. Try chocolate and churros in the morning, tapas for lunch and a traditional Spanish meal in the evening.
