My Spanish male buddy's surname is "Altayo Finestres". What does "Altayo Finestres" mean in Spanish?
Q.1) The same as the title question
Q.2) Does the word "Altayo" come from his father side ? "Finestres "comes from his mother side ?
Altayo come form his father and Finestres from his mother.
The meaning is difficult, Altayo hasn´t meaning it´s only a family name from Cataluña, and Finesterres became form Galicia, there is a place called "Finisterre" in Galicia, form the Latin that wants to say the end of the world, because in the medieval age people thougth that this piece of land was the last thing and later only there were mosnters.

Alta means high or tall, so I´m thinking that Altayo is some derivative of high or tall.
Here's what you could do...search under "name origins". You will find sites with name roots, and the like.

"Finestres" is surely a Catalan surname means "windows" in Catalan language.
I found Altayo on a website, stating that it is also a Catalan surname but no idea about its origine.
Yes, first surname is father's surname and second is the mother's, as women in Spain never lose their surname when they marry.
