Words of encouragement? You are going to be in/near some of the most beautiful places in the world!
Learn a little Spanish, and if you get a place off base, in the real community, you'll have more fun, I think. (of course, that would be my plan of action going anywhere with the forces...I seriously thought about the Navy, simply so that I could live there...but then, I figured out that when you WANT to go somewhere, that is NOT where the US military sends you).
Bars and pubs are not all there is to Spain. And they probably aren't what you are thinking of, anyway. Bars are RESTAURANTS in Spain. You go, have a drink (alcoholic or not...coffee is just as commonly served in most of them as beers) and a tapa or two for lunch or dinner. They are not places to go out and get drunk...and they really frown on drinking too much anyway. You'll fit in with the locals better than most.
Take every opportunity to travel and explore the rest of the area. Cádiz is nice, and you'll probably find yourself becoming comfortable with the people there. I lived in Sevilla during university, and would TOTALLY use the opportunity to go back at every chance! You MUST go there and explore the city. Also: Córdoba is worth at least a weekend. Granada...go again and again! Jerez! I have been trying to get to Jerez and tour the bodegas there for almost thirty years! Still haven't made it!
Use as much of the time that you can to go to further abroad, check out Morocco, Madrid, Santiago, the whole Northern coast...and Barcelona...I know you can probably work some trips in.
don't make that ugly frowny face, and take advantage of the opportunity that is handed you!
email me if you want more positive messages. |

Good luck Carrie, it's beautiful there. You can be a family anywhere. And traveling/exposure to culture for the kids will remain with them the rest of their lives. |

Carrieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.... Couldn't you have come to Quantico instead?
*Sigh*
Spain will be so much fun! Think of all the stuff you and your family are going to get to experience! I can't wait to hear about everything there! (Hopefully you will share with me, at least!) |

Wow... how exciting and terrifying all at the same time!
I think it would be so interesting to experience another culture first-hand. What better way than to live there! I spent a month traveling in Europe a few years ago. I wish I could pack up my hubby & my son and move there for a while. I didn't get to go to Spain, but I've heard how absolutely beautiful it is.
And with today's technology, it's much easier to keep in touch with those back home.
Good luck, sweetie. And try not to worry. It will be a wonderful experience for you, and 3 years will fly by before you know it. |

Texas Mommy!

WOW. Spain?? I encourage you to enjoy the rich experience of living in a foreign country. I'm sad to hear that you are gone for three years there. I'll miss you :-( Write me if you need to! |

Carrie you will love Spain!!
Do not get it confused with Mexico/Latin/South America. It really is NOTHING like that lol the only similarity is the language!!
The people are very friendly and welcoming, the culture is unique, and way of life is very easy going and laid back!! I have to tell you that you are in for a shock with the food!! It will for the most part ALL be fresh and locally produced, something that is not oh so common in the wonderful US of A :P :P
Trust me there is much more to Spain than bars and pubs...... this is only the case on the Costa's but other than that you will love it! I live in England and i will be moving out to Spain to live and work in 2 years time i cant wait!! |
