Please help! Spain advice? |
Hi there,
My friend and I are trying to plan a trip to Barcelona, Spain to go to Spanish language school for 6 weeks. I'm a sure thing, and she desperately wants to go but is concerned about the money. Also - I'm quite scared of going alone to the school and being terribly lonely.
So, for 6 weeks, I've budgeted 2000 $ American for food and spending. Does that sound adequate or no?
Any advice at all is so appreciated. Thank you! Additional Details We will be staying in a student apartment, no meals included. We don't want to go overboard, but we would like to enjoy ourselves. Go out to eat and to a club probably twice a week. |

That club, from what I understand, is gonna cost you! (We didn't go to any while there...not really our scene), but if you really want to experience Barcelona, you want to go to one every now and then...in addition to the dancing/partying places, there are Jazz and music clubs that I would suggest you investigate (probably almost as expensive - but it's the liquor that gets you).
You can go cheap by bopping in to the BoquerÃa, or finding a more local market and buying your groceries there, as the locals do.
You ought to be able to do that, since your lodging is already paid? and you should budget yourself to about 200€/week at that number. It will go up and down according to the exchange rate, but you should be able to do food, etc., on that.
Oh, yeah! Watch out for pickpockets! Careful, as mentioned, getting on and off public transit, and when you are tired at the end of a day, or whenever you are someplace crowded.
Spain is great in that things are relatively safe...personal crimes are quite rare, but pickpockets and ripoffs...those are extremely common.
There are those who will tell you no more than in any other city, but statistics say Barcelona is one of the worst cities in the world! But, only for pickpocketing...rarely physical. Just keep things really safe...they are REALLY clever. Razor blades to the bottoms of bags and pockets. And, as I said, any time you look unaware. THAT's when they tend to strike, so if you are aware of your surroundings, they will sense that, and pick on someone else.
Good luck, and don't worry about being lonely! You'll find someone to hang with.
Good advice regarding entries to clubs and drink prices! 15€!!!! That is incredibly high! (but then, maybe NOT so unbelieveable.) |

I´m really sure you would not be lonely as there will be other students in the same position as yourself. With regards to money as long as you budget, you should be fine. |

Let's see, you're looking at a little over $300, or 200 euros, a week for food and spending. You should be fine. When I was in Barcelona, I spent under 30 euros a week on groceries (I can be pretty cheap, but I can't imagine more than 50). If you eat out at reasonably priced restaurants, you can get a good meal for under 25 euros including wine and dessert (You should definitely try Les Quinze Nits and Origen 99.9 for good Catalan food at good prices). In my mind, that leaves plenty for the sites and going out, with some left for souveniers.
There are lots of students there. I think you will make friends easily. |

i went to barcelona this summer, and the food wasn't horribly priced at all.
i don't know if you're planning on living with a family or in a hotel or something, because if you're in a hotel, then 2000 definitely wont be enough.
in one day, we encountered 3 pickpockets, so watch out!
we were getting on the subway, and the thief was getting off, and tried to steal stuff from a woman i was with so that the doors would close, and he could get away.
another time, we were on a bus and a man in line for the bus was trying to get into the man's backpack in front of us.
you really need to make sure that you have a secure bag with zippers, preferably with a strap that goes across your chest... i absolutely hate those, but i would hate getting everything stolen from me even more.
the city is not all that dangerous, you just need to always be on the lookout.
make sure you visit las ramblas, there are all these really cool street performers and pet shop stands.. they sell pigeons and weird stuff like that haha. also, la sagrada familia, it is amazing.
i really want to take a language trip too! i hope you have a great time! i would love to hear about it if you could get back to me when you get back :] |

i could be wrong but that 6 week program you speak of puts you with a host family and i believe food is included in the package. look into it, like i said i could be wrong. but if i'm right then all you really need is spending money for any weekend travel or eating out. |

Spain is crazy expensive at the moment. ( I was thinking of going to Spain later this year, but am now probably going to the USA instead).
I very much doubt you will get lonely in six weeks in Barcelona. It sounds like a lot of fun from what I know of Spain, and it will be full of people holidaying and partying just about all year round. |
