Please help! Towns to visit near Barcelona? |
Hi there!
A friend and I will be in Spain for 6 weeks at language school. We'd really like to see a lot of the less metropolitan lifestyle. Smaller towns, with less urban culture. Any reccomendations? Also - how do you get to these places? Is it better to book tours or go on your own?
Thanks so much!

VIC
A very beautiful town that is in the comarca (country or district) of Barcelonés is Vic, very close to Barcelona city, and it's very beautiful and has a vibrant student life, therefore, night life as well. Is a very crowded and busy small university town.
SITGES
Sitges is a summer resort, but not on the mass-tourism style line, since it keeps its enchant of a historic small marine town, and now is very famous as a top-gay destination, but you don't have to be gay to visit it, because it's well-known and recommended by all people in Spain.
TARRAGONA
Is not on the Barcelona province but in the Tarragona province, and it's its capital city, obviously. Is a medium-size city, busy (it's coastal), beautiful and historic (Roman origins) and very interesting by all means.
Is not far from BCN city either.
EDIT: I live in Zaragoza, although I was born in Murcia. Zaragoza is very beautiful and interesting by all means as well. It has a long past, a large cultural heritage, lively street life, student life (it's a university town) and night life, a well-known folklore (see the Jota for example), good food... Yeah, fantastic city, now it's even better due to the Expo Zaragoza 2008 that turn the city into a more modern metropolis. It's big according to Spanish canons (aprox. 670,000 inhabittants on the city core, and about 800,000 on the metropolitan area including satellite towns). It's the 5th largest city of Spain.
Is about 3-hour travel by car/coach/train if you start from Barcelona. It's in the middle of the way from BCN to Madrid.
If you take the AVE (high speed train) you will take 1 hour.
It deserves a visit for sure. Great city. |

If you use the public transport, the train can take you to nice places.Near Barcelona I suggest Sitges. It´s a nice sea coast village you will like.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sitges
As you go to Barcelona I suggest going to the Montserrat mountain. You can get a train from Plaça Catalunya to Monistrol and then the train called "cremallera" that climbs the mountain to a nice area that´s got a monastery.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montserrat_(mountain)
Figueres is another nice town to go to,as you can visit DalĂ´s museum.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Figueres
http://www.gencat.net/turistex_nou/home_ang.htm
Please check this web,in here you can find information and pictures and decide other places to go to.I would suggest a hundred of villages to go to.There´s a very little and lovely one called Rupit.
Cadaqués is also very nice, and so is L´Escala (both two hours drive from Barcelona),sea coast both of them.
If you can make it for a long weekend,I recommend visiting the Pyrenees.Lovely area, full of small villages, far from the big towns.LlavorsĂ,Rivera de CardĂłs,Sort,Vielha...
Feel free to contact me for farther information,ok? |

You can get on the Cercanias trains going either north or south along the coast. There are cute little towns all along the way. For example if you buy a ticket to Tarragona you can get off at an interesting town then get on the next train going south without wasting the ticket. You have to pay attention to the time and the type of train, though since some trains are more expensive than others. I really like the towns of Torredembarra and Altafulla. Small enough to walk around the whole town but interesting enough to make you want to stay longer.
As far as taking tours. They tend to be more expensive and more organized, but they are easier for people without a lot of Spanish skills. Not much chance for adventure, but you would be taken care of and sometimes that's a good thing. The tour of Montserrat is good, as well as the open top tourist bus in Barcelona (and they give you discount tickets to a lot of interesting places like the aquarium and the 3-D movie place) . Otherwise I'd say it's more fun to go on your own. Good luck and have fun! |

Many programs will set up excursions for you.
There are TONS of little towns near Barcelona, and tons in the rest of Spain (you might want to go back on another trip to explore some other regions!)
A couple that I have liked, or would still like to check out:
Tarragona (famous for the Roman ruins and amphitheater there)
Sitges (recommended to me)
Figueres (DalĂ home and museum...REALLY cool!)
Cadaqués (Art colony...supposed to have really great lighting...impressionists all converged there during the early 20th century)
Lloret del Mar (castle of significance)
Almost any of the seaside towns have something worth seeing.
I would also suggest you get inland...good camping, farm country, wines, etc.
Trains will get you to a lot of places for less than 10€. And there are busses.
Have a great trip! |

I just want to say, that if you get chance, you must visit Zaragoza, it is an amazing city! It is not really close to Barcelona, but you can catch the AVE train. I lived there for a year and it is a beautiful place, the city is big, but there are lots of small streets and markets, and you really get a feel for Spanish life. There is also lots of architecture dating back to the Moorish times. If you don't manage to get there this time then I would definitely recommend it! Have a great time! |
