Portuguese speak spanish?

well i do know they have their own language (Portuguese)...but the two iberian countries are so close to each other and the two languages both derive from the Latin...so i want to know...do the portuguese speak spanish in their daily lives? or there are solid percentage people in portugal know how to speak spanish (just as many people speak spanish in southern california)? how about the people in spain...they know (speak) Portuguese?
Additional Details
so the portuguese feel insulted when ya approach them speaking spanish?
they reject to study spanish cuz they were once second class people and their country
was ruled by spain? so what? the hatred or dislike blended with INFERIORITY stop
them approach spanish?
I know where catalunya is it is in north east spain with barcelona as it is largest city
I posted it here cuz no “Portugal” under the “travel” category…only Spain there and I
chose the only 1 (catalunya) I know…

Actually, if you are interested in where to post, there IS a Portugal category in Travel...it's under CONTINENTAL EUROPE. And even if you were posting in the Spain category, there are 17 provinces, 16 of which are closer to Portugal than Catalunya is.

And, yeah. They are NOT fond of the Spanish...largely, as already mentioned, BECAUSE EVERYONE SEEMS TO THINK THEY MUST SPEAK SPANISH, as you do. That attitude is the largest reason why they resist the study of Spanish, and choose other languages. And probably because so many people seem to think they belong in Catalunya, you know?

And, yeah, if YOU were subjugated in YOUR country by another nationality, you, too, might be a bit disgruntled about it, especially since, most people show up in your country, expecting you to speak the language of the conquerors.

Think of all those republics that the Soviet Union ruled for the 20th Century, and some for much longer...how THEY feel about being thought of as Russian, and that they are expected to all speak Russian. How do you suppose THEY feel about that?

Besides, even in history, Portugal gets shunted aside. Most people aren't aware that Portugal was a huge maritime and economic power and the force behind the exploration that caused Europe to discover the New World...Spain gets all the credit, and they are forgotten! How would YOU feel?

And then YOU come along, expecting, as so many people do, that they should all speak Spanish there, because, why? it's more convenient for you? Then you are insulted to hear that your assumption is wrong?

Hmmmm. One wonders at the shameful attitude of the Portuguese.

Portuguese and Castellano are VERY similer though, but Portuguese has many H sounds where it's not kept in Castellano...

I don't know of they learn it in School.... Portuguese was never an option for me to learn (Spain) I could choose French...German.. other European languages but not Portuguese =/

I've never been to Portugal. You do see many Portuguese people in Southen Spain/AlmerĂa on Vacation =/ it is inteligible to speak with a Portuguese person for most simple phrases. But some words are very diffrent =)

But I know from bottles of Shampoo ect. that most words look the same... or you can think of their meaning easily

Jane is right, we ruled Portugal through an Iberian union. and the people become very poor... but Portugal gave the SPANISH titles/noble names to Portuguese, so we took them back and made them "pay" for what they had done. and then we charged high taxes to Portugal so they had a revolt, but we had joint rule for almost 60 years

read about Portugal bajo la Casa de Austria

but if you're asking if there is hard feeling now between us... not from our side ... =/ I don't know if Portugal like us, but we like them mdr

Jane S
Of course not! They speak PORTUGUESE! it is THEIR language!

That is sort of like asking if Americans speak Spanish in their daily lives! Cause, you know, we are so close to Mexico, and all that!

Actually, Portuguese people are FIERCELY independent and they don't LIKE being confused with Spaniards. If a person walks up to them, acting as if they SHOULD speak Spanish, they will let you know, with their attitude, that they are insulted (at least that's my experience - I found FRENCH to be much more useful in Portugal than being fluent in Spanish).

You see, apart from the fact that they get treated as second class, ANYWAY because they are the smaller country on Iberia, Portugal WAS ruled by Spain for a time in the 16th or 17th Century...because of some marriages between their royals. And they don't like it. I don't think they DID like it, at the time, either!

No. You might find people along the borders who find it expedient to know some Spanish because of people crossing, but as a rule, you won't find as large a percentage of Portuguese speaking Spanish as Brazilians. And for THEM, it's expediency based on their location. And not that many Brazilians speak Spanish, either.

But why did you post this under Catalunya, anyway? Do you know where Catalunya is? It's the OPPOSITE END OF THE COUNTRY FROM PORTUGAL.

*edit*. Yeah...they are NOT inferior...they are fiercely PROUD people.

There IS a Portugal category...you just have to find it (not terribly difficult).

And, yeah, they HATE being categorized as Spanish, or being expected to speak Spanish, cause THEY ARE PORTUGUESE.

I love all things Spanish, but I also respect the Portuguese for what they are and what they do.
