Una Sirena en el Lago Oscuro

Question for people who have traveled to Spain?

I have done loads and loads of research on Spain for years, but I still haven't found the answer to my question.

Of course I have Spanish friends but I want to hear the perspective of a foreigner too, lol. :)

I've finally decided that I'm going to go this year. I've never been in my life, I've wanted to go since I was 2, it's time to do something about it.

I have a choice... I can either go in October, or in November. My question is: What are the advantages of going in October? In November? If money were no object I would go in October, but the reason I'm considering November is because airfares are definitely cheaper, and I could stay through Christmas and see some of the Christmas traditions I've read so much about. I'm afraid that I'll miss out on something if I don't go in October... is there anything really special I'll miss out on if I choose to go in November instead? If that's the case, I might just go in October. I'll have less money but if it's worth it, I don't mind making the sacrifice.

I've decided that Barcelona, AndalucĂa and Madrid are the places I really want to visit. Barcelona is where I'll spend the most time.

I've read Fodor's and Rick Steves's guides. What are some other good books?

Thank you so very much if you can help!!

Okay....I'm a bit behind you...I was about 16 when I decided I had to go...and 20 when I finally did. I lived there for the whole year and it was TERRIFIC! ON the other hand, I really had to convince my husband! DK Eyewitness books...REALLY good! Did the trick for him.

Don't spend too much of your time in Barcelona...make it more 1/3, 1/3, 1/3, if you can...or weight it towards AndalucĂa, the true, romantic, what most people think of when they think of Spain, though, in the fall, you won't see AS MUCH of that as you would in the Spring.

Go in October...more flowers, more temperate, much prettier and more comfortable. Spend the extra...can't believe it's THAT much, unless you're looking at a BUY IT RIGHT NOW! price on the ticket.

Besides, now, I wasn't actually there during Christmas (I went out on tour of Europe then) but I don't know how much you would actually SEE, since it seems like most of it is in the homes, and they REALLY celebrate, more than anything, on the 6th January.

If you DO stay, find out what time Mass is on the 24th at the Cathedral (wherever you are). Likely the most exciting place to watch it.

I don't know Fodor's guides well. I find that if they don't have nice photos, I'm not very interested. I want to SEE where I'm going to go!

Rick Steves' show is EXTREMELY informative...I can only think that his books are, too. I HAVE picked one or two of them up, and found that, like all guide books, the prices are useless, but the recommendations can be good.

For Good online information, go to sevilla5.com Gobcn.com (Barcelona)

Check with Madridman's site for information.

Go to Granada early...to catch the gardens there, still at their peak. See a flamenco show, there. Tickets can be bought at many hotels/hostels.

For info on Sevilla, Barcelona, and what to do in/around Madrid...just email me...it's easier...tell me what you plan, what interests you...I can help you out.

I don't know how much difference there would be between October or November but I'd like to be as close to summer season so October would be my choice. After waiting so long why don't you go in August. So it will cost you a little more but who cares now you are finally going !!!!

october is a nice time of year it normally starts to rain in november the Christmas period in spain is usually very quiet as it is still a very religious country and that time of year is normally kept to family and church its not the massive commercial thing as in the uk Christmas celebrations start in january on three kings day don't come in august unless you like it hot it was up in the fifties last year so much so that we are thinking of going back to the uk for the summer months

Firstly, the weather is better in October. If you have Spanish friends, go where they are, they will be able not only to show you the tourist things and sights but also the places the locals go and were the good value places are.

Regarding Christmas. It can be lonely away from family at Christmas. Think about it carefully.

I think that the best guide books for Barcelona & Madrid are the 'Time Out? guides. They have ruined many of my favourite places by publicising them!

Have a great holiday

You can check the blog post below--I used most of these sites when planning my trip to Spain this year.

Also, if you go to Barcelona, definitely check out La Sagrada Familia. AMAZING!
