Rats in a rented villa (Spain)..what are my tenants rights ?

I am renting a long term villa in Costa del Sol, and have had rats around the garden for a month or so, the landlord said I should expect that in a large garden, and has basically washed his hands of it! I have grandchildren playing and am very nervous...does anyone know my tenants rights regarding this, is it my problem to solve or the landlords?
Additional Details
I have lived on the Costa del Sol for nearly 20 years, so I know about the problems with rodents/lizzards etc...I never had them for 18 years in my last house, and just want to know whose responsibility it is in a renting situation.

Try poison a first yourself, if that fails, contact exterminators, then present the bill to the owners, if it is rented via an agency present the bill to them, they should take on the job of clearing the troubles, and present all costs to the owner.......

Your problem. Get a length of drain pipe and put poison in it, keep the kids away or place it on the ground where they can't touch it. Couple of days baiting with poison and hey presto no rats. Pipe needs to be about 2-3 inches dia to keep out cats.

The problem with poison is that they can die somewhere indoors after they drink water, and start smelling after 3 or 4 days. They are, after all, only little rates; like large mice really, and not those big grey ones in the UK. Have lived on Costa for 12 years in the campo and I've had no probs. Cats, hawks and snakes keep them under control. Good luck

if the rats are inside all the landlord has to do is to make the house secure from further entry the actual removal of the rats is down to you.

Most pest problems are not down to bad building but to the residents behaviour with failing to keep the area clean and free of food an nest sites.

It's the owners responsibility but your immediate problem. There are rats everywhere in spain. If you put poison down, the dead rats will attract flies and create more problems. Sorry but these problems come with the territory when living on the Costas.

It depends on where the villa is. If you are out on the campo you will have to accept there are rats about. I live in a rural area and have to be careful not to attract them. If I find a rat nearby I will trap it. I used to work on a farm in the UK. I've caught rats before.
Your tenant rights differ to the UK or wherever you are from. Get a cat and let it sort out your rats, that's what my Spanish neighbours do.

I Rented a Villa in Spain, and there were rats. There are Rats in most places in spain, to be honest there are Rats Nearly everywhere a human goes. The Rats in spain where i was didn't bother us at all because they would just run across the garden every hour or so and didn't run into the actual villa. You may have Rats because there is a stream or a moist place near by. Don't worry they don't go in swimming pools. i wouldn't worry about the rats don't bother them and they wont bother you!
Hope this helps.
