Risk of working illegally in Spain (EU nationals)?

I've been living here in Spain for 14 months and been given a job in construction. My employer keeps saying he's going to register me legally however after a month I'm still waiting. I have a social security number and have passed on all the relevant information to him. He is simply avoiding it and paying me cash in hand.

I'm from the UK.

What are the consequences of being caught? Is it more severe for Americans than Europeans?

Thanks

Thanks for your responses.

With reference to some of the answers, specifically Jane's - being an EU citizen doesn't mean i can work and not pay tax! A Spaniard can't work in his own country unless he follows the rules - that's the point of having rules.

I've spoken to my employer, I will be insured at the start of next week and will have to sign the contract.(me va a dar de alta)

Spain is a lot more dodgy than the UK that's for sure. If you ask me the law here is too easy to go around for the self employed. In reaction to my questions my boss said "there's ways around that".

Thats Spain for you.

As an EU citizen you are perfectly entitled to work in Spain. However, as a Spanish resident you should have a Fiscal Identity Number (Numero de Identificacion de Extranjeros - NIE) - if you haven't already got one, go to your nearest police station with a foreigners' department (comisaria) with your passport and a photocopy of it. Fill in the form, keep your copy, and wait for your number to be assigned (a few days to a few weeks), then go back to the comisaria to get your certificate.

As it's your employer who appears to be dodgy, you shouldn't suffer too badly apart from possibly having to pay all your back taxes in one lump. The consequences for non-EU citizens, however, are likely to include deportation.

as EU-citizen you are legal. Just pass the information that he probably is not paying social security to the Guardia Civil. They will accept it anonimous and check into it.

EU nationals are legal to work in Spain...it's an EU country. That's the point of the EU.

Nothing, you're from the E.U you have the "right" to be here and steal our jobs ^^,

but if you're not registered then you're not paying tax on you're income
the worste that can/will happen is the Government find out and make you pay all your tax to them in ONE HUGE GO, so I'd atleast make sure you're "saving" some of the money for when this day comes

American and other non E.U national can/will be deported

So long as you declare the income, then you are doing it legally. It's only illegal if you don't declare it. It is your responsibility. Cash is often the main commodity here in Spain.
Getting caught will cost you whatever country you live in. If you have a social security number in Spain, then you are probably a resident. That being the case, you have to pay your taxes in Spain. Just tell your gestor. They will sort it out for you.
