I have been to salou.. I absolutely hated it. It was the worst place I have ever been to and thats saying something.. I have stayed in lots of countries including third world ones and salou was the most disgusting place ever. It stunk of sewers for the whole 2 weeks, the beach was awful and the weather wasn't anything great.
Benidorm is supposed to be Blackpool with a bit of son. Full of irish bars and English fish and chip shops.. not the traditional spanish areas you are looking for.
I have never been to or heard of Benalmedana before - so I have no idea where that is..but I can honestly say if I was in you're situation I would choose this one.. simply because I know 100% it can't be as bad as the other too. |

None of them.....they are all heavily built up tourist destinations. Salou is actually in Catalunya, Benidorm is in Valencian Community (which is kind of Catalan) so if you want ''close'' to traditional Spanish you should go to Benalmedana, but head a little more inland where you can get away from the tourist spots.
Just inland from Benalmedana there is a town called Mijas......there are a lot of good little eateries there and you will be in and around all the local people so that would be a good bet for you :D
I WOULD however highly recommend Salou to you. From here you can easily access cities Barcelona and Tarragona. Here you will find a lot of traditional Catalan cuisine which in my opinion is much more complex and nicer than Spanish cuisine. Of course you will find some Spanish places, but typically the Catalan people are very proud of thier culture so it could be interesting for you!
Have a great time, any other questions feel free to email me at

None of them. I have been to all whilst working. If I had to choose between three places on the peninsula which I would least like to visit, you have named them all. (Airtours by any chance?)
I did find a tapas bar full of locals in the old part of Benidorm.
Of the three I would pick Salou. You can hire a bike and head down to Cambrills via the new promenade. There are some Spanish eateries in the old part of town. |
