If like me, you prefer the scorching sun, then Malaga is the best place as it will be considerably warmer than Santander (although Santander is hot at this time of year, just not as hot as Malaga).

I have a real issue with the style of Málaga...too touristy, and I've never been to Santander, having only heard good things about it, I am curious. Therefore, if I were going, that would be my choice.

I'm looking forward to discovering the North of Spain...know my way around the South pretty well, but haven't explored the North yet at all.

Malaga is the pits.

But if you are limited to the choice of the two and you want some sun the it has to be Malaga

Santander is a port and not the most attractive town in northern spain but go along the coast a bit and it is awesome but you will not get the guaranteed sunshine of the south.

Hi!!
I'd rather Santander. As Sue said, Malaga is too mass tourism oriented, altough the city itself is beautiful, with its Alcazaba (moorish citadel), its old town, nightlife, friendly people. It's a big city (6th in Spain, 560,000 inhabittants) but If you're lookin' a very beautiful city, without the influence of foreign tourists, your choice should be Santander.
North of Spain is also stunning in almost every sense of the word: cuisine, beauty (nature, cities), beaches (altough colder than the South ones)...
Santander is a lively city, bussy the whole year, with a beautiful bay, and beautiful architecture. And North Spain is a place to discover. It's unknown by almost all foreign tourist, but is really worthy.

Nerja which is about an hour east of Málaga airport is a lovely town. Typically Spanish with lovely cove like beaches. Further east of Málaga you reach the Costa Tropical. The first town you arrive at is La Herradura The scenery is absolutely stunning, though slightly further on from there and still less than 90 minutes from Málaga, there is a place called Marina del Este. This place is an absolute jewel of a place. I doubt many on here commenting will have any clue as to where it is. I go there occasionally because just to get away from the crowds.
