I am an American living in Spain and my wife loves shopping at ZARA. When we´ve gone back to the states to visit she says that it is expensive in the states. I´ve had friends come visit who love buying things at ZARA also. The style is different, very European. My wife always gets stopped at the states because of her clothes. People asking her where she got her shoes and other stuff. The € has the advantage over the $ right now but that can easily change. Some things are ridiculously more expensive and less quality but then you can make up for it with other things that are less expensive.

If you're in the US, things are a bit more in Spain than they are here.
Like a t-shirt, tourist type, would go for around $20 here, probably closer to 25, there. But you can get some nice things inexpensively.

Dinners, their way, will probably run you around $10 - 20 at a modest place. I think, last year (the dollar was a bit stronger, but not much) we paid around $60 or so for a couple of drinks, and tapas for three. We really ordered more like enough for 4 or 5. We wanted to try a bunch, and it was a friend's parents' place.

If you skip real meals sometimes and get bocadillos (enough for a light lunch) you can save, and go to the markets and buy picnic food, that will save you, too.

Shops: There are malls, and one big department store chain. El Corte Inglés, I'll link you up to their website catalogue, and you can get an idea from it.

Browse around a bit...there are several departments.

Personally, I like to go into the tiny little shops where there is barely enough room for you, the clerk and the merchandise. Much more interesting.

There are a bunch of shops in the Plaza Mayor that are worth browsing. Some really cheesy tourist stuff all made in China, some decent representations of true hand crafts, and one really nice place that sells really expensive, locally made artwork. Tons of little places around the Plaza as well.

Also, if you are there on Sunday, the Rastro flea market, a couple of blocks away, though I found that to be more oriental things than actual Spanish souvenirs, and the Stamp and Coin market right in the Plaza Mayor...both close up at 2:00, so go early.

Gran Vía has some fun places to browse through, but others have mentioned that it's overpriced there, and there's a better district to actually buy in, but I can't remember the name.
