girona is about 90km from barcelona. Anyway there is a bus service going from the airport to barcelona city center. For moving around barcelona i definitely do not recommend it to do it by car.
About accomodation, i've you stay around city center you can go walking to almost every tourist spot. You can find affordable hotel offers and grouped by districts at http://www.cheapbarcelonahotels.co.uk/ |

Everything that you need to see in Barcelona is walking distance. Stay in a place as near to Las Rambles as you can.
You'll have a fab time - Enjoy! |

If you are going to Barcelona CITY, do not hire a car.
Public transport,(Once they have fixed the AVE railway line) is great and cheap. Parking is expensive.
Driving in Barcelona is not a pleasant experience, (especially for those from the US). They drive too fast, they do not drive with due care and attention and the road signs are confusing. All the streets in the centre look the same. I love to watch the French drive into the Zona Franca and not to França! Or they guy I saw drive his scooter against the traffic flow in Carrer Aragó!
If you are going to Barcelona Province and intend exploring the Province of Girona, a car is necessary.
Strange though it may seem, as has been already mentioned, Barcelona Airport is in Barcelona, Not Girona but that can't be helped.
Do not hire a car if you are going to Barcelona city. Take a bus from the Airport. |

The airport at Girona is in another province, i think they call it barcelona /girona to sell more tickets, but it is a distance away. You can hire a car if you want but i lived 17 years in Girona and hated driving in Barcelona , it is very busy and the streets are all one way, so even if where you are going is close by you can get lost very easily.Do you usually drive on the right hand side of the road? because if you are from Britain it can be confusing at first , be careful.
here is a link that should be very useful to you. enjoy yourselves !!

Did the airport name not give the game away?, lol
You don't need a car while your there as it's quite small with an excellent and easy to follow transport system so unless you intend of going out of the city I would'nt bother.
I would get a hotel booked though, as it's a beautiful and very popular city and its gets booked up pretty quickly. |

No - too much hassle
Just get the bus from the airport to the city centre and relax - much easier that way

There is a bus which is always outside Girona airport to meet all Ryaniar flights and the cost of tickets to get to central Barcelona is real cheap. Once in Barcelona public transport i.e. subway and taxis are real cheap so I woul dsuggest to use public transport.
It is also not so easy to find parkign spaces and to get used to the style of driving in you are only there for a short time. You might find more info on http://www.holiday-velvet.com/barcelona |
